The group wasted no time in deciding how they were going to scare the poo out of themselves. Bungees, bridge swings, zip wires etc. The pressure on people not sure whether they wanted to do it was intense. I spent the first morning watching and getting very nervous for them myself. I had done a bungee before so my eyes were set on a gorge swing hailed as being more terrifying than the 111 meter bungee. The gorge swing however was twice the drop and more importantly cheaper. I had to do it.
I only had one go so I asked for the best way to do it. Death drop was the answer (backwards). A simple platform with no edges was the platform to jump off. I went up to the edge turned and let myself fall backwards. I was in a somersault, I saw the platform spin away, sky and then finally the cliff I was falling down came into my sight. Arms out I stayed in a freefall position meters from the sheer face. It was like being superman and the nearest thing to base jumping without killing yourself. A gentle tug on the harness marked the end of complete freefall and the start of a 240 meter swing. The G forces increased on two full body harnesses looking down I was flying across the Zambezi rapids just meters below going at a tremendous speed I could go on but it was amazing - loved to do it again. The day was rounded off by going directly to the Victoria Falls hotel for high teas and to watch the sunset over the falls.
The next day we went to see the falls, I can see why they call it the smoke that thunders. The falls were in full flood so it was tricky to see the falls as opposed to the spray that came off it. The mist that rose came down as torrential rain and on the edges this was horizontal. We did not bother having rain coats as everyone said that it soaks you anyway. To see the falls you have to wait until the wind changed direction giving you glimpses of the falls at various points. Rainbows were everywhere very nice photos.
Vic Falls is in a national park so it is not uncommon to be walking down the main high street and see elephants in the early hours. Wild baboons and warthogs were on the lawn outside the post office during the day.
It was our anniversary so we went back to the Victoria Falls hotel (5 star) for cocktails. We did our best attempts to look clean and smart but it is amazing how dirty you can get even after having a shower. As soon as I got there I went into the toilets to have a wash, wiping my face with the white flannel I could see a hand print made from the dirt off my face. It was a lovely evening .
