We left Harare leading for Gwero (12 hours). We stayed at Antelope Park, a rather slick operation that was trying to reintroduce Lions back into the wild in various places in Africa. We got a drum and dance reception when we got there, ice cold drinks and the promise of showers that actually worked. There was pretty much all that you can do with Lions, elephants etc on offer. Being budget conscious we decided to go on a night safari where we followed the Lions that were being reintroduced into the semi wild. A big red light shone the way and we were soon seeing all kinds of action.
The lions had a couple of goes at giraffe. The second attempt was very interesting seeing the lions stalk and come within meters of a baby giraffe. The giraffe sensed something just in the nick of time. A big chase ensued, watching the giraffe running for their lives we noticed dozens of zebras run directly across their path. The lions where confused and in the end nothing was caught. Two other big chases were seen involving impaler. We did not feel cheated by the lack of a kill, just seeing the lions in action was amazing.
The second of the things we chose to do was see lions feeding. A long dead wilder beast covered with flies was laid in a compound. Six or so fully grown lions were let in and we watched as they ran towards us just a couple of meters away. The lions went mad, blood even hit Liz. A Lions ran off with half the carcass and then decided to drag it back for some reason. The other lions were not pleased, a skirmish ensued and Lions was pressed up against the fence scaring the poo out of Liz standing just the other side.
