My first time sleeping in a hammock open to the jungle was fine however I didn't get a lot of sleep. A guy in a nearby hammock was snoring and if that wasn't enough made a right old din at 4:30am when they got up to trek to the falls for sunrise. It was surprisingly quite cold during the night.
At 5:30am I got up to see the sunrise hitting the falls. However all we could see from the view point was a thick layer of cloud covering the entire mountain. There was some hope however a very fait outline of the tepui began to reveille itself.
One of those breathtaking moments presented itself. Clouds had shifted from the middle section of the km high vertical face then for an instance that was captured in our memories the top of the falls also cleared of cloud. Imagine falls falling into cloud reappraring at the bottom of that cloud and then falling into another cloud. You could see the air currents produced as the falls went through the clouds, the falls appeared to be sucking the clouds into it like a big egg timer. It's km high majesty was appreciated for the first time!
After breakfast Liz made the decision to tackle the hours trek to the falls base. The jungle was beautiful lots of tea coloured streams to cross and large tropical plants. The falls grew louder until eventually we appeared at the view point. After 5 minutes wait the entire falls were visible. We headed up further to get a closer look at the swim hole at the base of the second waterfall. For me this was the second highlight standing on a rock at the base of the second waterfall looking up at the point where the falls seep out of the sheer mountain whilst being blasted by the spray at the bottom - we even had blue sky.
We set off down early to ensure that we had more time for photos in the jungle. Wierd colourful plants were more noticable, light illuminated massive leaves and the place was full of amazing butterflies and massive dragon flies. I had to run sections to make up for the numerous photos being taken. Liz reported an area where she saw those irredesent blue butterflies and numerous humming birds. I almost had to be dragged back onto the boat when I saw them.
After lunch we set off back, we made sure that we were at the back this time to take pictures of the route without spray hitting the camera. The boat possitively wized downstream and before long we were back with the knowledge of a shower and a nice bed.
We all went out looking for somewhere to have a drink and discuss the routes people were taking after. We were knackered but it was an amazing day.
