Little did we know that we crossed a time zone travelling east, the impact was to miss the free coffee and set off late for Bryce Canyon.
On the way to Bryce we went through Red Canyon that was very photogenic and amazingly red.
I have been to many canyons around the world but nothing prepared me for Bryce Canyon, it is simply stunning.
Setting off late had a knock on effect, firstly as a concequence of rushing I was stopped by the police for being 9mph over the speeding limit - luckily I got off with a warning. The second downside was fading light at some of the best view points.
We wanted to come back here the next day and also see some other areas close by. The plan was to find a place in the town outside the park. Camping was not an option due to the altitude and the freezing nights. The first town was full, so was the second and third. By this time it was completely dark. The next town was over the mountains on a road I was warned to take very carefully. The Americans don't put up barriers on most mountain roads, it can be unnerving driving round a hairpin when all you can see over one side is air. In this case the road hugged rock faces and at a few places seemed to be on a ridge with black voids on both sides of the road.
Anyway we got to Bolder and got into an independant motel (by god it has character). If this place was full we would be facing another hours drive further into the mountains.
