While James was here we decided to take a day trip out of the city to Lake Bosumtwi. This is an incredibly unusual lake about 30 miles from Kumasi. We were fortunate to have Fausty with us who knew the area and took us to this great location where we could see the whole lake. The first thing you notice is that it is almost perfectly circular and surrounded by hills on every side. It has been discovered that the lake is a 25 square mile impact crater from a meteorite. The lake is regarded as sacred/special/a nice spot to swim by Ashanti people. We drove down to the lake, paid our toil money (daylight robbery), dodged the people selling crap and looking for money and went to the lake shore. I had been expecting a tranquil scene but Ghanaians are not like this. They like LOUD music and the lake shore was no exception. It was a fun, party atmosphere with families spending time together, dancing and swimming. Most of the people there were not swimming far as it is not a common activity here. I did not go in having no swimming trunks, but I had fun sitting out in the sun and paddling. Eric, James and Bob though made the most of it and we all had a good time. Eric especially had fun with a large blue rubber ring.
The journey home was also memorable for the wrong reasons. The weekend we chose to go to the lake is a holiday weekend and while travelling back to Kumasi Eric, who was driving had to slow to go round a pothole. The car behind did not slow in time and went in to the back of our car. No one was hurt though a little shaken. The car that hit us drove off but Eric caught them up quite quickly as they had cracked their radiator and were losing water fast. It turned out that all the occupants of the car and especially the driver where very drunk. Eric tried to negotiate with them a financial settlement but the driver who had borrowed the car was not having it and got a bit aggressive. We left and drove on, I later heard that the car was impounding and the driver arrested. In all the day was good, but the accident was a reminder of the risks of travel on the roads here.
