Welcome to our last Australian installment.
Our last stop was Cairns and we travelled up here last Sunday from Mission Beach. On the way to Cairns we stopped at a Croc Farm where we saw our first cassowary (3rd largest bird and dangerous). The guy who owned the place was a little crazy and sat on a 5m croc. Just before we left we held a blue tounge lizard, baby croc and Marie had a snake put round her neck (she didnt agree to this by the way). You also had the chance to let a snake bite you but we passed on that one. Krish also brought a Crocodile satay which wasnt too bad, its taste like a mixture of chicken and fish and it was chewy. Marie tried a tiny bit and did not like!
We had one night in Cairns before getting up and heading for Cape Tribulation (the rainforest). We stopped at Mossman Gorge and another little zoo where we held baby Euros (a species of kangaroo). We also had a guided walk through the Daintree Rainforest where the driver pointed out interesting facts. When we got to our accomodation for the next couple of days, we went for another walk along the beach. No swimming in the sea there though as crocs about. The next day (Tuesday) we relaxed round by the pool in the morning and then done another rainforest walk in the afternoon (self guided). On Wednesday, we got up and went Jungle Surfing. This is flying through the rainforest on zip wires. We were about 20m up and got to see what it looked like of the ground. The rainforest is really beautiful and we were glad that we decided to go up there. Its like seeing a totally different side of Oz.
That afternoon we were picked up and headed back to Cairns. On the way back, we done a Daintree River Cruise to look for wild crocodiles. We managed to spot a few and the man also managed to get our boat bogged. He had to jump out and push it off the sand - rather him than us after seeing what was round the corner. The biggest croc we saw was about 5m and what they call 'Fat Albert'.
We arrived back in Cairns Wednesday night and quite worn out. On Thursday, we had a wander around the city. A lot of people dont like it here but we think its quite nice. Yesterday (friday), we went on a boat trip to the Great Barrier Reef in search of Nemo. We went on a semi submarine ride where we saw a turtle and lots of different fish. At 12.15pm, we were geared up and ready to do an intro dive on the reef. As a couple of people bottled out, it was only us two and the guide at that time. We went down for 30 minutes and it was really amazing and went really quick. We went down about 15m and swam around the reef. As nemo wasnt spotted, we went snorkelling off the bay in search for him. Unfortunately, we didnt find him, but we did see lots of other pretty fish including a Dori and a Gill. There are some massive clams on the reef aswell which slam shut when you got too close. After our time snorkelling, it was back on the boat and we headed back to Cairns. It was a really nice day and we had ended up getting a boat upgrade at no extra cost so we'd got ourselves a bargain.
Last night, it was our last night out in Oz and we were shattered. We forced goon down our necks for the last time and headed out to celebrate Ericas birthday. We started in the Woolshed which is the main backpacker bar and we also havent had to cook this week as they offer free dinners. We finished the night in Rhino bar before heading back shattered. It had been a long day.
We've had so much fun in Oz and made so many new friends. Cant believe we've been here 10 weeks, the time has flown past. Now looking forward to moving onto Singapore tomorrow but will miss Australia. Australia is a massive place and we've only seen one side of it. We wouldnt be suprised if one day, we came back to see the other parts.
