We made it to Hungary! Actually, as I speak, we're in Bratislava, Slovakia, but it's been a while since our last update! The computers here don't have accessable USB ports, so you'll just have to wait for the rest of our pictures from Serbia, all of Hungary, as well as Bratislava.
Hungary was fantastic! The first city we stayed in was just over the border from Serbia, Szeged. We had a great day walking around the city, and seeing the many exciting sites, like the Pick sausage museum, city plaza, university area, and Jewish synagogue. We discovered a great little restaurant, Point Royal, and had two awesome meals there- soup and appetizers for a late lunch, and a fish soup and gnocchi with cheese for dinner. We were surprised at how much more amazing Hungary was than Serbia- more modern, lots of convienences, and easy to get around.
We also traveled to Pecs in Southern Hungary for two nights. One of our primary reasons for going here was to do the wine tasting that we never got to do in Moldova- too expensive! We set aside a whole day to go to the small village of Villany, just one main road there! Every single building was a winery, and after our private wine cellar tour at Bock Winery, our guide told us that about 99% of citizens work in a winery or own one, where as 1% only consumes the wine and doesn't work! I'm sure we'll write more about our winery tour later, when we post pictures, because that great day deserves a post of it's own.
After Pecs, we spent two nights in Budapest. What an amazing city. Loads of important buildings, monuments, statues, and castles. Also, Statue Park, just outside of town, where we spent an hour wandering among 40 statues collected from behind the Iron Curtain. After the fall of the Soviet Union, nobody wanted these gargantuan statues, so Budapest placed them all in one area, and it's turned into quite the park. We've got lots of pictures of that!
Another great area of Budapest was Castle Hill. This is where most of the historical buildings are, and there's also a great view of the amazing parlament building from across the Danube. We didn't go in the Mathias Church, as it was too expensive, but just had a great morning walking around. The delicious goulash for lunch just added to the experience.
Now we're in Bratislava for the evening, and just got done seeing the city and watching some football (go Pack!) at a local sports pub. It may be only the first game of the season that I've seen, but it was a whole game this time, not just watching highlights over Kenny's shoulder! We'll be going to Vienna tomorrow for a few nights, then it's off to the Czech Republic. Hopefully, we'll be able to update our photos from somewhere along the road!
