Copenhagen, Denmark
My love affair with Germany may have waned a little with my stay in Berlin, but the trip north has rekindled the love embers! From Stralsund to Lubeck, I found yet again more examples of how Germans have got it right. My trip north to Denmark, although interesting further strengthened my theory, that Germany has got the right stuff.
I high tailed it out of Berlin and headed north. As I started to smell the salt air again I found myself in the middle of another awesome German town.I pressed forward and stayed the night in Lubeck and found again another impressive town.I am still amazed at the number of bicycles being used and also amazed to see plots of land that have been subdivided to create little community gardens.Just before I enter each German town I see it;A large fenced in area with 100's of little plots and buildings that house the gardening tools.Everywhere I turn, Germans are biking, hiking or just strolling. There are more nature preserves, nature trails, and parks then one can shake a stick at.Every city has an impressive collection of green space and everyone seems to be very green conscious. All in all Germany seems to offer a pretty good way of life. For me though it would never work, not enough warm days and boats!
Denmark I think has even fewer warm days.I have never seen a collection of white people that are so white. It is almost like there are ghosts riding around on bicycles here.It is also strange to see so many blond and blue eyed people walking about.I think there are more blonde and blue in Denmark than in the rest of Europe.Actually I should add, "natural" blond and blue, because then SC would probably take the cake! =)
So I can't quite get a feel for Copenhagen.I like it, but I don't like it.I get a good feeling and I get a bad feeling.Maybe it needs to sink in a little more, although I know that it is time to turn around.
For the first time on my entire trip, I actually had to drive through almost blinding snow!As I drove north from Lubeck, I started to enter the darkest cloud I have seen.Snow began to fall, but being that it was still not freezing out it seemed to not stick. Then it started to get slushy and my worst nightmare…..almost came true!Luckily the weather turned and I was able to follow in the tracks of the car ahead and avoid skidding out of control in the slush, but I did have a scare there for a little while.Images of cars trapped in the snow and than me, a frozen popsicle on the roadside popped into my head.
More to come….
