Crikey Mate
It's been a ripper today, Peta drove us up to Australia Zoo, home of the crocodile hunter Steve Irwin and we spent the day there which was awesome.
The place is huge and once inside our first stop were the american alligators all basking in the sun and taking it easy. From here we went to see the giant Aldabran Tortoises being fed, they can live up to 250 years old in captivity!!! (unlike Mel's Horace who was naughty but she still misses!!!)
Then it was onto the freshies these are really big and grumpy . We just had time to fit in the dingoes, casowaries and red foxes before it was time for the big show in the Crocoseum!!!
First out were the elephannts followed by the snakes and then the native birds before Murray the Croc entered and we were shown how they feed and move through the water. The whole thing was very educational and sent out good messages about conservation.
After a short stop for lunch we went and had our picture taken holding a Python this thing was huge and really heavy (I will post the picture soon.) This would not normally be our thing but you also learnt about the animal and its habitat through close interaction which gives a greater knowledge of the animal.
It was a short ride then on the zoo shuttle up to see the Elephants and tigers that they have here before having to make our way back past the kangaroos and the rainforest birds. Mel got the chance to interact with a koala for a brief moment before it took a shine to its mate and she left them to it.We just had time to look in the snake house at all the venomous snakes that live in Australia and there are tonnes including the death adder, taipan, eastern brown and the copperhead.
The whole day has been fantastic and we both learnt so much, the 1st anniversary of his death passed very recently and he was loved so much and there were many tributes to him around the zoo.
A fantastic zoo, very educational and friendly with a sound conservation message.
Lots of Love
