G'Day
Well Guys what a fab 2 days we have had. It started yesterday morning at a familiar 6am and it was a short 55 minute crossing on the flat bottomed Fraser Dawn boat to the island. Straight away Stave our guide had the vehicle in 4WD mode and we were off into the bush bouncing around and leaving our seat on more than a few occasions!!!
Our first stop yesterday was the Yidney scrub (rainforest) to look at all the various trees that grow in just the sand. They have a lot of different types including the Satinay, brushbox and strangling fig. From here it was a ride up 75 mile beach (which is also used as an airstrip, more on that later) to Eli Creek, this is the largest freshwater creek on the east coast and pumps out 4.5 million gallons an hour!!!!
We took a swim in the creek to cool down and refresh as it was hot. Once out of the creek we got the opportunity to take a 15 minute scenic flight over the island to see it from a different perspective and it was fantastic a real birds eye view, plus the only place in Australia where you take off and land on sand. The pilot set us down at the Maheno shipwreck which has been there since 1932 (i think) and we got some great photos before moving on to the Pinnacles (coloured sands) a sacred site for the resident aboriginals. Back on the bus and minus the bumps it was straight up highway 1 (the beach) to the champagne pools for another dip to cool off before the climb up the only rock formation on the island, Indian Head named by James Cook in 1770. From here you get superb views of the beach and the ocean.
By this stage time was running out and so was the daylight so it was off to the campsite for the evening.Steve our guide gave us a Digeridoo lesson which was great fun, I did manage a few notes from the stick but more practice required I think.
Fraser Island is a great place to spend your 10th wedding anniversary and we had another packed day, again it was up at 6.30 and once the formalities of breakfast and changing our flat tyre were done off we sped down the bumpy track and onto the beach. We had a 1.8km hike over the sandblow to Lake Wabby which used to be a creek till the sandblow formed and dammed it, here we got to swim for an hour and relax before heading back to the beach for a picnic lunch as the weather was fantastic again. It was here that we said goodbye to the ocean and headed inland on the Morelle Track to the knife edge sand blow which is just eating up the forest. Our time was running out but we had one more stop at Lake Allom. This lake is special because it is 120m above sea level and is in sand but because of the decayed plants it has become waterproof and is home to turtles which we got to swim with. It was then a 1 hour bumpy ride back to Moon Point to catch our boat, we could not have asked for a better anniversary. Happy Anniversary Babe I Love You Loads xx
Lots of Love
