We decided to head to Iguacu Falls, despite it being on the other side of the country and involving a 23 hour bus journey, as we had heard really great things about it from other travellers. So we settled onto our bus in Rio for the journey ahead. It actually went quite quickly despite the fact that we were both quite ill on the way, but we made it in one piece and managed to get a good few hours of sleep.
We arrived about 6.30am and had a couple of hours of sleep then went straight to see the falls. When we arrived we couldn't have been more disappointed, there was just a trickle of water and lots of bare rocks, not at all what we were expecting! Not quite worth the long journey! But we carried on walking through the park and realised that we had actually been looking at the wrong falls! Hee Hee.....but we had had a long night!
So, Iguacu Falls is quite spectacular! Located on the Brazilian-Argentinian border. Iguacu, meaning 'Great Waters', is made up of 275 falls in total and is 3km wide and 80 m high, making it higher than Niagra and wider than Victoria.
Many years before they were 'discovered' they were used as a burial place by Tupi-Guarani and Paraguas tribes. The site is now a World Heritage Site and sees lots of tourists, but we were quite lucky and saw it when it was relatively quiet. Iguacu Falls gets a thumbs up from the Mapp sisters, and was well worth the journey...yippeeee!
