Sunday 24th April
After our big day out on the Barrier Reef we decided to have a more lazy day. We booked a coach trip to Port Douglas, about a one hour drive north of Cairns. We left at 10am. It was quite a cloudy day and we spent the first few hours walking around the shops and the Sunday market. It was too windy for the beach int he afternoon so we walked up to the marina area and had a drink in one of the bars before catching the bus back to Cairns.
Monday 25th April
We left early in the morning for a day trip on the Kuranda Railway and Skyrail. It was another cloudy day with not much sunshine at all. The train ride to Kuranda was a good journey and we enjoyed looking in the shops in Kuranda. I decided to go on a boat ride up the river and was lucky enough to watch some fish and turtles feeding at the side of the boat. We also saw a large freshwater crocodile sunning himself on a log by the side of the river.
When I got off the boat ride it started to rain. Jan and I decided to get on the Skyrail, a cable car ride right over the top of the rainforest. The clouds blocked a lot of the view but we still enjoyed our trip back down to the bottom.
Tuesday 26th April
For our last full day in Australia we booked a day trip to Mossman Gorge, Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest. We had to leave early in the morning and the weather was not the best - it rained on and off all day. Our first stop was the Mossman Gorge and a welcome ceremony from an aboriginal lady. We then drove up the Gorge and some of the group went into the river for a swim - it was too cold and damp for me! We had a few minutes in the souvenir shop before setting off for our 'Croc Cruise'. We were on the river for about one hour and we saw two large crocodiles and a few baby crocs. We also spotted a snake circles on the tree by the side of the river.
Our next stop was The beach at Cape Tribulation - where the rainforest meets the Ocean. It was a shame it was too wet to have our food on the beach but we still enjoyed our kangaroo burger and beer battered chips!! On our way out of the rainforest we spotted two Casawarry birds crossing the road - they are not seen very often on the trips so we were very lucky to see them. We stopped for a delicious ice cream before heading back to Cairns.
