On Monday, we got up and decided to have a walk around the town to figure out what we wanted to do over the next few days. After walking around for half an hour, we came across St. Paul's Church which sits on a hill overlooking the town. It was built in the 16th century and it now has no roof but the walls look sturdy enough and there were the graves of several Dutch and Portuguese people within the church. After having a look around the church, we were both sweating in the humidity so quickly made our way to a set of museums nearby with the promise of air conditioning. We walked around the Governor's house, the Literature museum, Education museum and the Democratic Government museum for about an hour and a half. One thing to say about all the museums which we have visited so far is that Malaysia doesn't do then by half!! The amount of information and reading in each of them is incredible and I think Beth has taken to just looking at the pictures in most of them!!! For lunch we went to a place called Geographers Cafe where I had some fried rice topped with a fried egg and Beth had chicken satay which were both really nice.
We then caught the bus back to the bus station which is about 5km out of town but which seemed to take about 45 minutes to get to. We booked our bus for Thursday to a place called Butterworth from where we will catch to ferry to Penang where we are due to stay for a week. Across from the bus station we noticed a Tesco so we had a nose around there before catching the bus back to the town square. On the bus on the way back, I managed to get stung by this little flying scorpion sort of thing which had pincers. It stung for a while and Beth looked a bit concerned given that we didn't have a clue hat kind of insect it was. It left a bite mark but hopefully nothing more!!
We had a bit of a lie in on Tuesday morning before we had a look around a Buddhist temple which is one one of the streets next to our guesthouse. After this, we stopped at a cafe for some lunch where Beth had Vietnamese fish wrap whilst I had Thai chilli chicken with rice all for less than £4!! We then went to a maritime museum which is in a huge replica ship just off one of the main roads. This was probably our favourite museum out of the several which we have visited in Malacca. As it was so hot and humid, we sook out the coolness of a shopping mall and had a look around there before we headed back to our room.
On Tuesday night, we had another look around the old centre of Malacca before we again had food at the Geographers Cafe. This time Beth had a veggie curry with naan bread whilst I had chicken satay with fried rice and again both were really nice and cheap.
Today (Wednesday), we decided to take a river cruise which goes about 9km along the river. This cost us about £3 each and was definitely worth the money as you get to see areas of the city which we probably wouldn't have seen. Some of the bridges are really well decorated and we also saw a few lizards swimming across the river which looked slightly like small crocodiles. We also found out that they spent millions on a monorail system here which they then found out doesn't work in the rain. That's a bit of a problem considering that the humidity triggers quite a lot of rain so the monorail hasn't been use for over 3 years!!
So tomorrow we leave Mallaca and we have both really enjoyed our time here. It's been especially nice coming here from the hustle and bustle of Singapore. We are off to Penang on a 7 hour bus journey but at least we have a week there where we can base ourselves and try the amazing food which Penang is renowned for.
Edit: Tonight, we have just been to a North Indian and Pakistani restaurant where we have both had two of the best curries which we have ever had. The restaurant is called Pak Putra and is only a 5 minute walk from our guesthouse. Beth had a fish curry with a garlic naan with onions whilst I had chilli, garlic chicken and a garlic naan with cheese. The chilli, garlic chicken was pretty spicy but the flavours were immense. The whole meal cost us under £5 so if anyone is ever in Malacca, we cannot recommend it enough. It's probably a good job we've just discovered it on our last night as otherwise we would have ate there every night!!!
