We had a really good last night in Singapore with Chris and Charlotte from England and Alex from Canada. We first went to Chinatown on the underground and went to the Maxwell Food Centre which is basically a load of stalls selling different Asian foods. Beth plumped for the Mori Goreng which is basically prawns with noodles whilst I had rice with beef all for about £4 between us. After finishing our food, we decided to go back to the marina which we had visited during the day as there was meant to be a few things going on. When we got there, there was a light show outside of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel which was about to start so we sat ourselves down amongst the crowd and enjoyed the light show which was pretty impressive. After this we headed across to the Chinese New Year festival where there were absolutely loads of people still at 10 at night. After having a bit of a look around, we decided it was a bit busy and there was some random guy on stage who would be lucky if he was good enough for karaoke in a local pub never mind up on stage in front of thousands!! We all had a really good night which was helped by the fact that there was loads of free stuff to do and we are looking forward to coming back to Singapore at the end of our trip.
We said goodbye to Chris and Charlotte this morning which is a shame as we got on really well and would have liked to travel with them for a bit in Asia. We had to jump on 3 trains just to get to the bus station with all of our bags which was a challenge as the trains were full. After clobbering a couple of people with my flailing boots which were strapped to my bag, we eventually made it to the bus station and were pleasantly surprised by the state of the bus. There was plenty of leg room and there weren't any random animals on the bus which we have been warned about in Asia. The border crossing into Malaysia was really simple and after collecting our stamps we were back on the bus for a further 2 and a half hours into Malacca. We then had to jump on a local bus, again with our huge bags, which was again difficult as the bus was rammed and there was standing room only. After whacking another couple of people we made it to our stop and were thankfully helped by a couple of locals who told us when to get off. We quickly found our hostel, Galileo Guesthouse along a small side street and checked into our private room which we are pretty impressed with.
Tonight, we have wandered around the Jonker Night market which is one on the main attractions here on a weekend. It's basically a market on the Main Street in Chinatown with loads of little stalls selling all sorts of stuff. Beth had some fish balls from one of the stalls (not sure what kind of fish and what is meant by balls!) and I had a Taiwan sausage which was pretty good whilst we both had a potato cracker stick and shared a spring roll which again was good. The market was excellent and it was really good to have a wander round and look at all the stuff on display. One thing we have noticed is how much cheaper it is here than Singapore. It's like being back in parts of South America in terms of prices and even cheaper in most ways. Thank god as the budget couldn't have taken much more of the caning it got in New Zealand and Australia!!
