It's been a while since we updated the blog as our last few days in Buenos Aires were pretty chilled out.
On Wednesday, we were both a bit knackered after the previous two days of a lot of walking so we decided to stay in the apartment to get a few bits done which we had been meaning to do all week. This mainly consisted of washing our clothes before we returned to hostel life. I set Beth away with this task and headed to our favourite bakery for some of our favourite empanadas. These are pretty special and are now definitely amongst our favourite foods.
After relaxing, and washing, for most of the day, we then headed out for a few drinks to sample some of the local bars. This included an English pub where Beth braved a pint of Quilmes as it was happy hour. She reckons that she didn't mind it but I ended up having a pint and a half of the two pints. I think I will have to give up with trying to persuade her that she likes lager! We then headed to a couple of Argentinian bars where I enjoyed a couple of pints of homemade beer and we both enjoyed some red wine and people watching. The red wine over here seems to be pretty potent as we were both well served by the time we made it home.
On Thursday, we walked to Casa Rosada which is where Evita made a famous appearance. It was a canny building but there wasn't really much else to see. We then headed for another walk around Puerto Madero before getting more empanadas and eating in.
We were leaving the apartment on Friday but our host generously allowed us to stay until 6pm when we needed to leave for the bus station. We sorted out our things, it felt like re-packing our bags at home again after washing most of our clothes, and made sure we were ready for the 15 hour bus journey to Mendoza. We went to the shops for a few snacks for the journey and, amongst other things, purchased a pack of Oreo biscuits. I'm not that big a fan of them but I definitely know someone who is!!! When packing out bags to leave for the airport, I asked Beth where these biscuits were, to which I got a sheepish reply and something mumbled under her breath. After much investigation, the location of these biscuits could not be found but I reckon I could make at educated guess!!!
Overall, we have had a great time in Buenos Aires. Having the apartment was absolutely fantastic and we were really lucky with the area it was situated in having not done a lot of research. We really enjoyed the quirky San Telmo with all of its shops, bars and restaurants and the relative ease which with we could get around the city (when I could read a map right). I know my favourite thing was definitely visiting the Boca Juniors stadium and getting the guided tour, I could only imagine the atmosphere inside the place when Boca score. Beth's favourite thing was San Telmo market on the Sunday with all of the stalls, music and street sellers and the general atmosphere which was around the place when the market was on. A highlight for the both of us has been the food and the wine. The empanadas and steak which we have had has meant that we are not missing any food from home really (although Beth did want a Greggs sausage roll the other day).
We have really enjoyed Buenos Aires and would hope to return in the future.
