Heading down to get breakfast we saw a bit of a crowd outside so thought we would have a bit of a nosey. The Hot August Nights Car Show was having a street viewing, at least four blocks of downtown Reno shut to normal traffic packed both sides with hot rods, muscle cars, classics and other restored four wheeled contraptions. There was a fully decked out willey's jeep complete with inert M60 mounted on top, 524 and 77 in the back, claymore and clacker on the front seat. If anyone thought summernats was huge this makes it look tiny, street legal cars with massive superchargers hanging out the bonnets, hot rods that would never be licenced in Aus and even a huge kids trolley ( I mean huge, the size of a truck, with V8 engine and steering wheel). Went back inside the casino to have breakfast (note it is only 9.30am) and there are already heaps of people playing the pokies and on the gaming tables, oh well. Breakfast done and off to Lake Tahoe. Great drive past Carson City and up over the mountains again, this time we got up to 2450m above sea level. Lake Tahoe is huge and an unbelievable blue, it is half in California and half in Nevada. Every beach you head to on the lake wants to charge for parking, I can imagine how packed it would get. The temp was about 25c but the water is absolutely freezing, still people swimming though and the water was very clear. We drove around to Crystal Bay. There is an old resort there called Cal-Neva (California - Nevada), it straddles the border between the states. In fact the swimming pool is half in California and half in Nevada. It's main claim to fame is it was once owned by Frank Sinatra and was a popular haunt for the Rat Pack. It is rumoured Marilyn Monroe spent her last weekend there before she died. It's a bit tired now but worth seeing. Fantastic huge fireplace in one of the huge rooms (see photos). All along the roads were beware of bear and moose signs, didn't spot any though. Headed back to Reno and out to Sparkes to another Factory Outlet Centre. Adjacent to the Centre is scheels Sports Store, reputed to be the largest in the world and I believe it. As soon as you walk inside there is massive fish tanks shaped like arches you walk through. These tanks have a large variety of good sized fish. In the centre of the store is a big working ferris wheel. The prices are also unbeatable. I got a pair of Asic Gel Kayano's for $99. Wandering around I found 3 half sized Daytona cars lined up with three big screens in front. It is like a huge computer game, you get strapped in, start your engine and race, you get bumped spin out and the car shakes and rattles, great fun. Right next to the cars was about a 20ft high fake hill with a heap of stuffed animals on it. It had all of the types of animals you would expect to see in the Sierra Nevada's and surrounding areas, brown, black, grizzly bears, wolverines, moose, elk, wolves, mountain lions, prarie dogs, etc. I suppose the hunters need to see what animals they are planing to kill before they buy their weapons. Now for the gun store, gob smacked, it is massive. They have a payment plan in the shop that reads "Shoot now Pay Later" . Every type of weapon except possibly machine guns, one section was labelled "Home Defence" and had a heap of pump action shotguns. There was even a pre loved section full of pistols. The archery section was nearly as big as the gun section. Back to the Casino and an early night ready to head south through Death Valley.
