Coorabie Farm is a 50,000 acre property 8km off the Eyre Highway.
It was a little deserted and of course, very dry and dusty when we arrived, but we were greeted by a farm hand and told to park wherever we wanted and the owners, Deb and Poggy would be along later to have a chat and a drink.
There was one other van here, then a young couple arrived in a campervan. with two very small children. They had a little girl aged 2 and an 11 week old baby! We were so surprised that people would do such basic camping with two small children in tow. But they were a lovely couple, he originally from South Africa and his wife originally from New Zealand, but she had spent quite some time in Australia working with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Apparently this couple had visited the Farm before, and we later found out that there are a lot of return guests to Coorabie. Their little girl was very friendly and enjoyed the company of the "grandmothers" in the group.
Then later on along came the hosts, Deb & Poggy and what a very warm and welcoming couple they were. They sat down and joined the group and we felt like we had known them for years. It was a very friendly and happy campfire, with everyone pitching in to help both with the fire and with the BBQ that followed. The blokes proceeded to wash up the dishes after dinner so it was wonderful.
As there was no hot water in the camp kitchen, water had to be continually on the boil for cups of tea and washing up, but everyone pitched in and helped out.
The amenities here were spotlessly clean so it was a lovely experience.
There was a beautiful sunset and then a lovely starry night. It is nights like this one that really make the journey so wonderful. To see how people live in these remote areas, how happy they are and how hard they work. We really do meet some very interesting and inspirational people.
Deb & Poggy were along this morning to bid us farewell, both with big happy smiles and to say they hoped to see us again some time. Hopefully maybe they will?
