We eased in to our journey to Belize by splitting it into a day trip to Tulum and then a bus/boat journey to Caye Caulker. The bus was nice and spacious with air con with comfy seats only took 2 and half hours and cost around 240 pesos.
We stayed at Las Tres Palmas and booked a family room for 246 pesos each. This room also had air con so we lucked out! There were lots of dogs around and we put that down to the dangling runners on the street lamps. That said, it felt safe and was a short distance from the station and restaurants.
We arrived early in the day so had lunch at this authentic restaurant accompanied by it's very own live band. Great atmosphere and friendly people, food was delicious and cheap.
Tummies full we ventured towards the Mayan ruins, entrance fee was 59 pesos and the views were incredible. It didn't seem real I kept thinking it looked like Jurassic park!
The beach was beautiful but full of people so we found another one further along but by the time we got there, there were gale force winds. The boys showed off their athletic skills and we all attempted to walk on our hands - and failed.
Left early to get some dinner but were no so lucky this time and had a big mix up with the order, spent 40 mins waiting for my meal while the others has finished. Definitely need to learn more Spanish for eating out as "No puedo comer gluten" was not enough.
Early rise for Caye Caulker in the morning, we had booked our bus to Chetumal and boat to the island at the station earlier that day which was a good thing because it was rather busy and they gave you assigned seats together. Total cost of around 850 pesos.
