From Rome, we made our way to Pisa. The journey took us about 5 hours and for once we arrived at our campsite (Camp Torre Pendente) in the early evening.
After setting up our tents and solat, we walked outside to see yet another wonder of the world: the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We were able to just walk from our campsite; it is about 20 minutes away by foot.
Again, seeing such an iconic building got me awestruck and then everyone started the "cliched" poses at the Tower. Pushing, pulling, holding it, all the works!
There's also a big church right next to it. We entered it, and as it was a Sunday evening, there was a big congregation there; which I suspect is their Sunday mass. Of course, after entering The Vatican, this seem just a little less impressive. But it does have all the sculptures and ornaments typically seen in Italian buildings, a result of Roman Catholic influence.
We walked around the area to get souvenirs and stopped by a restaurant for our last authentic Italian pizza and coffee. It was so much cheaper than in Venice and tastier, too. Our margherita with mushroom pizza is €5, cappucino and latte macchiato for €2 each.
While eating, we saw a huge procession of priests, nuns and Catholics walking around town. Not sure what are they celebrating as their sermons and prayers were in Italian. But from what the waiter told us, it is like the culmination of something the people of Pisa have been observing since June 17th.
After the rest, we walked back to our campsite. Dinner was already served: ayam masak lemak cili api! Woohoo.
Like in Venice, the campsite in Pisa has got a lot of mosquitoes, although much less and much smaller - but it is the Aedes type! Nighttime is nice and cool and the sky is again clear with many shining stars.
Had trouble sleeping that night. It;'s either the rocky area where our tent is put up, or the Italian latte that kept me up.
But still, our final night in Italy before heading to the Swiss Alps tomorrow!
