Lynds' Travels
Hi all,
Well the trip back down from Chiang Mai to Bankok wasn\'t as nice as on the way up. To start with the train was late by about 2 hours, then when on board we realised it wasn\'t as clean as the one we arrived on. The bed opposite me had loads of bugs crawling over it - I told the guard and he shut the window and brushed them off around the train...pleasant. The girls went to sleep quite quick, but I stayed up talking to an Aussie guy that we met on the platform. (Don\'t panic Mum, he\'s engaged!) We talked a bit about my dislike for bugs and spiders, then when I told him I was going to Oz for 5 months he told me I had better \'wake up princess!!!\' I guess he is right. The train finally arrived at Bangkok 3 hours late - no transport runs on time in Thailand - and then we jumped on a bus over to Kanchanaburi.
I really liked this place, though it was quite quiet - low tourist season. We stayed at the Jolly Frog Hostel, which was nice enough, right on the River Kwai. Whilst here we visited the JEATH Museum, which is dedicated to the prisoners of war that were involved in making the Kwai Bridge and railway, known as the death railway.(JEATH stands for Japan, England, Australia, America, Thailand and Holland.) One in three POWs died whilst this railway was made over an 18month period. We also saw the war graves here which was very sad, as most of the soldiers were younger than me when they died.
Had a bit of a booze up in a bar opposite our hostel and played lots of pool again. Got offered drugs in the form of amphetamines and I think cannabis! We declined....and got given a Thai lad\'s (who spoke no English) Mob no. Tee-hee.
On our last day before our trip back to Bangkok we caught a train along the Death Railway, which goes over the bridge. Emma and I walked over this too (Sarah couldn\'t, with her height phobia...)
We have decided to catch a plane down to Ko Samui, after our last train ordeal...
