We carried on route 7 to Greymouth and then down the coastal road all the way to Fox Glacier. There are 2 main glaciers in this region called Fox and Franz Joseph. All the backpackers tend to go to Franz Joseph but we were told by a local that the Fox Glacier is better so we went there instead.
We got to our hostel and chilled out on the first night ready to go hiking on the glacier the following morning. We were up early and only had to walk 5 mins round the corner to the meeting point. We all got given gear, proper gear, with crampons for our boots etc. We then got a coach up to the foot of the glacier and started our hike right up into the middle. It was freeeezing but great fun. we saw so many cool features and the guide was very informative. She showed us where 2 days ago part of the cliff had given way and crashed down into the glacier and that you could hear it from right back at base. Luckily we were central so were not at risk from it. It was a great experience!
We got back tot he hostel and stayed one more night and warmed up with a nice dinner and some tea and watched a few films ready to hit the rtoad again in the morning.
