Well ive just managed to get all the sand out of my crevaces now after my 3 day tour to fraser island, the biggest sand island in the world, what an experience. We started early at half 7 setting up our vans, there were 10 of us in one van. We had to get 4 tents 2 eskies and heaps of food and alcohol onto the roof of one of these 4x4's and make sure it stayed there over lots of bumps, and this was all while it was pissing down with rain, but we managed it. So we our van ready we set off for the island cracking the first beer onm the way. It was a seven minute barge ride over to the island, with 6 4x4's on one barge. We got to the island and imediatly got into trouble trying to get on to the high tide access road so after a few failed attempts we let one of the other groups have a go and they went for it full speed and managed to get on to it but we later discover they popped their to front tires in the process! Following suit we tried with a bit more speed and made it up but fortunatly did no damage. As i said before it was pissing it down while all this was happening and i was a bit dissapointed with this cause everything looks so much better in the sun but nevertheless it made the driving fun with lots of puddles and muddy ditches to crash through, and after about an hour we arrived at lake makenzie which has been voted one of the top ten beaches even though its not in the ocean! Unfortunatly it was still cold and rainy when we got there so we were all really dissapointed, we struggled to make lunch in the rain and were all huddled under a bit of tarp streched between to vans, but that didn't work because as soon as it filled with rain it collapsed and we got soaked, so we had to leg it into the van and make lunch in there. After lunch things were vey different, the sun had burnt through the clouds and we all raced down to the lake and dived in under blue skies, it was brilliant! From now on the weather was good all the way so im not going to mention it anymore. After Lake makenzie we hit the road, or should i say beach, and traveld up the island to find a place to camp, luckly we manged to find the one that everyone else had gone to so we had 6 vans all getting loose so it turned into a wicked night. The morning after was not so good we had to pack up all our gear and get it on the van in time to do everything we wanted and we had lost one of our group, but we manged to get everything sorted and find our missing member. The next stop was eli creek, which was an amazing fresh water creek that you could float down, from there we went to the ship wreck, does what it says on the tin, and then up to the top of the island, indian head. We all got a groupe picture to prove that we'd made it before dashing back in the car as the tide was coming in and we were about to get washed away! We started heading down the coast to find somewhere to camp for the night but unfortunatly we lost the other vans so had to camp on our own which turned out to be fine. The next day we headed to the last point of interest, lake Wabby. Set in the middle of huge sand blows it felt like walking through the destert to get to the deepest lake on the island, but it was worth it and we all dived straight in when we got there. Now it was time to start the drive home, very sad, but it had been a good trip. It took us a while to find the barge pick up point, but we saw one of the other vans n stuck with them. When we got back to the mainland it was a race against time to get back to the garage to get checked out first n we were so close but at the petrol station the other group got just a head of us and even with some distraction from me they still managed to get away first! Fraser has definatly been one of the best experiences of the trip and I'm now looking forward to the whitsunday sailing in a couple of days but first we've got the cattle station to go to.
