We picked up a rental car yesterday and left Melbourne to explore the Great Ocean Road. It's been a beautiful drive and we've had good weather so far...the views have been stunning.
Drove as far as Lorne and woke up this morning to the sound of kookaburras screaching in the forest behind our hotel. The owner told us that they're part of the kingfisher family and are carnivores...we didn't get a close look but even from a distance we could see that that have a big beak. Yikes!
Today's highlight was the koalas. We turned off near the Kennett River and into a forest dense with eucalyptus trees. It smelled so good. Up above, though, you could see these balls of fur...they were sleeping koalas. So cute! In one tree, there were 3 of them and they were changing positions so we could see them climbing and eating a bit. So cool!
Also saw wild parakeets that were bright red & blue. Really nice! Luckily, we haven't seen any snakes but the walking paths often have warning signs to be on the lookout for them.
Tonight we're staying near these rock formations. It's really beautiful.
Onward to Adelaide!
