Lucy's Travels
Wednesday 24th January - Made it onto the ferry ok and took about 3 hours to get to the South Island. Arrived in Picton but decided to Drive to Nelson. Stayed the night at a camp site and had a walk around the area.
Thursday 25th January - Drove to Westport to stop for lunch. Thought we would have lunch on the beach and followed signs that said 'beach'. Over here 'beach' means driving on the beach. However, Dan drove off the track and into the soft sand, the wheel jammed and got stuck. After panicking we found two people walking and they stopped to help. They ran over and were really excited saying: 'me and my family love to watch people that get stuck in the sand we find it such a challenge getting them back out again and I wouldnt worry the water wont rise to this part for at least half and hour!!' They were great and managed to get us out but it took about half and hour! After this we were a bit disorientated and missed most of the things to do along the west coast. We drove to Hokitika and stayed the night - with a few beers to calm our nerves!
Friday 26th January - Drove to the Glaciers. Went to the Franz Joseph Glacier, which was beautiful with crystal like qualities. We then walked the 2 hour walk around Lake Matheson, taking lots of pictures of the snow capped mountains. Then drove to Fox Glacier and then onto a tiny tiny town called Haast. It was the nearest town with petrol for 130km! Our van was desperate! However, were eaten alive by sand flies! They sit on your body and draw blood!! Yuck!!
Saturday 27th January - made some friends in a similar van and started toward Wanaka (yes Wanaka), which was a really pretty drive. Stopped at the 'Blue Lakes', which were icy cold but beautiful. When in Wanaka had lunch by the lake looking at a mountain covered in snow even though it was 32C! Had a quick game of crazy golf and headed to Queenstown. Had a brief look around town and made Dan book a bungee jump (not for me) for first thing in the morning.
Sunday 28th January - Up early so that Dan could through himself off a bridge!! He was really nervous but I think I was more nervous for him! We bumped into our friends, who calmed him down a bit. He stood on the ledge and after 3 just let himself fall! He had a really great time and is pleased he did it and would do it again, only if his Dad doesnt kill him first. Off to a place now where you can speed down an 800m track in a cart and then go back up again in a sky train. Having a bbq tonight and then off to Milford tomorrow!
