Date: 30th May 2011
Place: Siem Reap
Weather: Super Super hot and sunny at first but then really rainy later.
Was woken up super early (7am) by Aoife because we were going to get our hair done. She had had her hair chemically straightened the day before and I decided I wanted it done because it was so good. But because it takes about 5 hours to do I had to go early because we were going to the temples today. I was half asleep still walking down there and it was already really hot.
We had it done in a little market place which was literally just a little cubby place that was about 2 metres by 1 metre and when you had your hair washed you were all scrunched up on a chair. The woman who did my hair didn't speak much English but she was really nice and got me water and did my nails for me for free whilst my hair was setting. When she finished it was so straight it was ridiculous and really shiny.
I couldn't believe it was only 12 when I got back to the hotel to meet the girls. We went down to, you wouldn't believe it, the Blue Pumpkin for lunch and then got picked up by the Tuk Tuks we had organised to take us around the temples.
It didn't take long to get to their and our first stop was Angkor Wat. It is one of the wonders of the world because it is meant to be the biggest religious place in the world. We walked along the long bridge to get to the entrance and had a picture. Then we saw a stray monkey so started taking pictures. Aoife went around a pillar to get a little closer and it suddenly attacked her! It scratched all of her leg and bit her so I was there panicking about rabies but it hadn't pierced the skin so she was ok.
We had a wonder around the temple and it was actually huge but not as impressive as I was expecting. Sarah was then telling me about the history of Cambodia which I had know idea about. About 30 years ago some people called the Khmer Rouge started taking over or something and they didn't want anything western at all so they killed anybody who wasn't completely Cambodian or who even had things like TVs. They would take them to camps where they would die and there are killing fields where they were all killed. They didn't want Buddhist religion in the country either so they destroyed all of the temples around Angkor which is why they are all so famous to look around because they are all completely ruined.
After Angkor Wat we went to a few smaller temples, the first I think was called Angkor Thom and it had loads of faces in the rocks everywhere. We also went to one that had loads of elephants in the stone and their trunks were like pillars. One was like a Tomb Raider style place. Tomb Raider was actually filmed in one of them but Im not sure if it was that one or not. It had trees growing all amongst the stone and looked really cool.
Whilst we were at the temple with elephants we had a few little Khmer boys come up to us and they were telling us about the temple. There was one who was so tiny and skinny and when we said we had food they could have back at the tuk tuk he got so excited. At the tree one we also gave the poor children some food that the girls had bought especially for them from the supermarket in town. They all came running over and literally surrounded us.
It was quite early when we got back but I had to go back to have another thing done to finish off my hair. So I got ready for going out for dinner first and said Id meet everyone at the Blue Pumpkin at 8 when it should be finished. I went back to the hairdresser and she had stayed open really late to wait for me. She had her husband there who spoke pretty good English so they were asking me more about myself and bits.
When it was finished I went to the blue pumpkin but nobody was there so I started walking back and I came across them walking down then. We decided not to go to the Blue Pumpkin in the end and went to a Mexican instead which was really nice. We then went back to Pub Street and went to the Temple Bar. I had a bit of dance with Sarah and then we went to sit outside with everyone. A group of people were sat on a table next to us and invited us to play a car game with them. You had to keep a card on your mouth by sucking on it and then pass it to the next person, its hilarious!
We played that for a fair while and got pretty bored of it so we went into dance. I went up onto a platform and was dancing and ended up talking to a load of guys who turned out to be from Milton Keynes! Small world. They were pretty cool and I was talking to one of them for a while. Carm then came over and said she was going back with the dutch guys so I said Id come back with the Irish girls.
She had the room key so when I got back and she wasn't there I was worried about her for one and I couldn't get into the room to just crash out in bed. When Abel showed up I was like oohh good is Carm with you but he said he thought she was with me! We sat and waited for her on the balcony and eventually she showed up all wet but happy. She had been swimming. Apparently she had thought she was following Abel and Thomas back but it was actually a man and woman together. So then she met another girl walking back alone who said she had a pool so they could go swimming. So she did.

Gran GREAT-- some cultural sightseeig at last! But keep away from vicious stray monkeys. With your luck, it's a wonder it chose Aoife to attack and not you. (And apropos that... you seem to be doing quite a bit of lone walking, which sounds pretty dodgy at this end. Carm takes the same risks it seems. Guess you must feel it's safe... hope you're right!) I clearly remember news reports about the horror inflicted by the Khmer Rouge regime. Very sad to read about children so desperate for food. Pleased you did them a good turn. How long will the hair-do last? The hairdresser sounded special -- interesting to meet her husband and be able to chat more.
