Place: 4000 Islands to Siem Reap on a bus
Weather: cloudy
It was an early start to get the long boat at 8am. I went to get Carm up in the next room and saw that Sarah was eating breakfast so asked her if she could order me some muesli and we had that together. I ate quickly though because there were so many flies!
The long boat was pretty much on time which was good but when we got to the other side of the river I jokingly said right settle in we will probably be here for another hour. It turned out I was wrong, we were there for about 2. We did have to sort out our visas for Cambodia though so it's kind of understandable but there was still a lot of waiting around to do.
When the bus finally showed up it was another sleeper bus. It wasn't anywhere near as nice as the one before but still had beds which was quite nice because we had loads of room. We got to the border and had to get off again but it was actually quite a quick turn around, I was impressed.
The bus journey was pretty tiresome though. It gets painful sitting down for that long and my ipod touch didn't have enough songs to fill the time and I got so annoyed with the ones on there. I couldn't listen to my normal ipod because Id leant it to Carm.
We were dropped off at a bus sort of place with a café. It was super grubby though, I had a coffee with milk and I couldn't stir the milk into the coffee, then when I went to get sugar there were ants crawling through it. So I skipped that.
I found Carm later holding a huge hairy spider! There was a little Cambodian girl playing with it as well and they offered for me to hold it even when I was far away from it. They started towards me and I legged it. There were also loads of bugs that were prepared to eat which is a speciality in Cambodia. Carm really wanted to try some bugs whilst we were in Cambodia but I just don't think I could do it; I probably wouldn't even be able to touch it to pick it up.
When the minibus finally came to get us to take us the rest of the way we were put into the back seats which were so squashed I literally couldn't move. That had to be the worst bus journey I have ever been on I nearly screamed. I couldn't move so couldn't get comfy and felt so claustrophobic that I had to open the window to stick my head out and calm down a bit.
We arrived at about midnight and were once again bombarded by tuk tuk drivers. I knew their little scam of trying to put you off guesthouses you ask them to take you to so that you go to ones they get commission for. Well they did it when we said where we wanted to go they said oh I don't think that's right for you. I said we will see for ourselves so just take us; I was pretty ratty to be honest!
It took us ages to find a place to stay because they were all full so we ended up just staying in a hotel which was really nice. Everyone else went to bed whilst I went out with Sarah to find some food. It was about 1am at this point and a bit creepy walking down the street but it turned out we ended up at the main nightlife area of Siem Reap which was buzzin! I loved it because we hadn't been in that sort of atmosphere for ages.
After getting all excited for a night out the next night we got some corn on the cob from a guy on the street and then had a cheap meal from a Cambodian sort of street place. I then spent hours on the internet because I finally had a good connection and wanted to download a load of music and films for the bus journeys.

Gran Yuk, yuk, yuk! Flies and ants on/in food... 'orrible. No wonder folk get tummy upsets. Carm sounds to wanting a "Get Me Out Of Here" experience, with her desire to eat bugs. Not some-thing I'd want to try.... Don't envy the long bus journeys either, even on relatively comfortable vehicles. And the cramped mini-bus sounds like torture! You've sussed the local tuk tuk drivers well; good on yer for combating their pressure tactics! From what I've read online, Cambodia should be worth all the hassle anyway. Once again, it sounds a much more appealing country than I'd imagined. ENJOY!
