My stay at Coffee Bay, Coffee Shack hostel is one of my favorite stops in South Africa. The rural village lies in the heart of the wild coast and is surrounded by rolling hills, rivers and the sea. The hostel had such a friendly atmosphere and served delicious two course feasts with fresh Xhosa bread every night, for as little as 2 pounds. Our first day we did the 'Beach Day' organized by the hostel where we had free surf lessons and yummy toasties before the rain set in for the day. The rain had cleared by the next day so we were able to take a trip into the Xhosa village. We visited the local families, trekked up the coastal river and visited a sangoma (a local herbal and spiritual doctor). We then headed back to the family we visited earlier in the day and she had prepared a traditional lunch for us all. This consisted of pap (ground corn- cooked with a consistency between potato and soggy rice) and beef soup with a ton of salt in it lol. It was absolutely disgusting and i felt sick with every mouthful but i had to eat it to avoid being rude. We completed the afternoon by visiting the local sheebeen (an illegal drinking den) where we were able to taste the local beer which was given to us in a 5 liter old paint pot lol and is tradition to pass round in a circle.... i wasn’t brave enough to try it as it smelt and looked disgusting. We headed back to the hostel to go on a 'sundowner'. On this they drove us to the top of a cliff where we had amazing views of Coffee Bay. We returned and partied the night away at a 'p party' ( Where we had to dress up with something beginning with p. Emma and I imagination didn’t stretch very far so we were dressed up as a pizza and a pig. The next day after a long shower to wake myself up we took a guided hike to 'hole in the wall' a famous landmark 9km away from Coffee Bay. The walk was absolutely stunning and took us along the cliff top and down along the beautiful beaches. We arrived at the hole in the wall just in time for lunch! I then psyched myself up to jump of the cliff..... so so scary. You waited for a big wave to come and then you threw yourself off the cliff and prayed for your life while you got sucked under by the waves! Good fun and such an adrenaline rush! The next day we sadly had to leave to make our way to Port St Johns for our next stop...
