Hi everyone, so I am now in Melbourne. On New Years Day I met Jo, Gaz, Adrian, Gaz, Mike, Will & Craig in the TV room and after Jo and Gaz went to bed we all stayed up until I left for my flight at 4.30am! It was funny as I was waiting in reception for my taxi with 5 blokes - They said they were just making sure I was leaving!! I don't think they care that although I was the one who introduced the Circle of Death drinking game, Will was the one initiating it all the time!!
The flight was an hour and a half and we had to catch a bus then a tram to our hostel in St Kilda. We were staying at The Ritz for Backpackers and was terrible - So dirty! That afternoon we went on a tour to Phillip Island to see the Little Penguins that waddle across the beach after sunset.. Firstly we headed to a winery to do some wine tasting...That was fun! After that we headed to a mini wildlife centre where we got to feed kangaroos. There were kangaroo's with Joey's in their pouches which was so amazing to see. We also got our photo taken with a koala who was half asleep at the time.
When we left their we headed to go seal spotting. We went to the cliff edge and the views were fantastic - Rocks lit up in the sun. we had a cup of tea and biscuits as it was getting windy before heading to Phillip Island to see the penguins.
The stands were full of people when we arrived so Caroline and I stood right at the back! We could see really well though... At about 9.00pm the penguins could be seen floating in the water slightly, they started to leave the water at 9.10pm when it was getting darker. These penguins were the same size as a ruler - 30cms - and they would leave the water in groups of anything from 3 to 30! There were hundreds of them leaving the water to get into the grass. People started to leave after the first lot of penguins had come out so Caroline and I managed to get right to the front on the sand and see the penguins up close.
It was such a spectacular thing to see - The disappointing thing being we weren't allowed to take photo's as that would disturb the penguins
The next morning we were up at 9am and checked out of our hostel. We headed to the city and found "Melbourne Connections Backpackers" which was really nice - Much better to our previous one! We had booked the Neighbours tour for that evening so during the day we wandered around the city. We headed to the neighbours tour at 5.30pm and set off on the 20minute journey. We first went to the school which really didn't look that familiar - Apparently they only film outside at the school - then we headed to the street.
The street is exactly like on TV and real people live in the houses, they have to keep the house exactly the same and if they want to change anything they have to ask the director. We got our photo's with the Ramsey Street sign even though the street is really called Pin Oak Street!!
When we arrived back in Melbourne Caroline and I went to the Casino! It was across the bridge and we stopped to take photo's of the big buildings alongside the river when fireballs started to go off from some buildings next to us! It was amazing and you could feel the heat of the fire. We weren't expecting anything to happen so we were very lucky to see it! After that we hit the casino and I went on the slot machine - I only put in $3 and managed to win $13!!! And then I stopped - Honest!!
The next morning we went to Federation Square which has some fantastic buildings but it was a very hot day. We were leaving for Cairns in the afternoon.
