Just in time for Shark Week, I am spending the weekend at the Clear Springs Scuba Park in Terrell, Texas to get my NAUI Open Water Scuba Certification. Terrell is about an hour and 20 minutes east of Tyler, so myself and another one of the interns are commuting back and forth, diving 6 times this weekend.
Day 1 was most of the simple skills (mask clears, alternate air source, controlled ascents) and dive tours around the scuba park. Day 2 was a little bit of rescue diving and a whole lot of dive tours. Our first dive of the day we made it down to 40 feet- a depth that nobody else dared to go to, and for good reason; it was FREEZING! We actually started hyperventilating we were shaking so badly, but it was definitely worth it to be able to say that we did it. During our dives we visited sunken airplanes, platforms, boats, and a giant metal shark, as well as followed fish and dodged terrified turtles. As of 1pm on 7/31 I became a NAUI certified Scuba Diver and I couldn't be happier!
