Today we had breakfast at the house which consisted of crossiants and scrambled egg on toast.
We then visited Anne Frank's house. Something we were all looking forward to. I had read her diary in preparation, so was looking forward to seeing the annexe in real life. The queue outside was massive but luckily we had pre ordered our tickets and walked straight in. It was a very emotional experience. We walked all around the annexe starting at the bottom in the office then headed further up to the secret annexe through the bookcase that hid it. The atmosphere was sombre as we walked around almost silently, it was so dark and small. The stories Anne told, described it well. The pictures of Anne upset me the most as she was so young but so insightful. I have so much respect for the office staff that hid the families as it was so dangerous to do so in that time. Really I cant think about it too much as the whole situation is too horrific to bare. But despite it being emotional it was fascinating and I think it has to be the best 'tourist attraction/ place of historic significance' (trying not to belittle it) I have visited.
We then rented bikes as we wanted to cycle to a windmill that friends of Emma and Tony had told them about. Its called Brouweriji 't and its a brewery next to a windmill! Amsterdam is full of cyclists, it is really fun cycling around as there are cycle paths everywhere and on nearly every road. Our bikes were really nice and really easy to ride. It only took about 15 mins to cycle to the windmill. Tony seems to be very skilled at looking at a map once and they knowing exactly where he is going. No GPS for our Tone! The windmill was shut when we arrived so we have some lunch and a beer at the bar next door. They said more than 90% of the beer brewed there never leaves the premises. The windmill opened an hour or so later and Tony and Dando went on the brewery tour. There wasn't enough room on the tour for me and emma so we sat outside chatting and had another beer while we waited for the boys. Dando could of lived there as he didnt want to leave, but we decided whilst we had the bikes that we wanted to go to Vondel Park for a cycle around.
When we got to Vondel park Dando and I promptly lost Emma and Tony. We didn't see which direction they went, so carried on seperately. We later caught up with them when Tony rang us to tell us where they were! The park is really nice to cycle around and its so nice like the rest of holland as it is flat! The music festival was on again but we decided to head back to get ready for our evening out. It was Emma and Tony's 7th anniversary so we wanted to go somewhere nice for dinner to celebrate. The boys went to the pub for a bit, whilst Emma and I drank wine and ate cheese back at our house. We then went to an Italian restaurant that we found in our book called Ponte Acari. It was lovely it was really small and right by the canal. The waiter was Sicilian and very charasmatic, joking around and making us laugh. Emma and I had the porcini mushroom ravioli which was delicious and Dando had the spaghetti vongole. For dessert I had a chocolate mousse and Dando had tiramisu. As they were closing shortly the waiter decided to give Dando 3 portions of tiramisu all to himself! It was hilarious! He then offered us some limoncello which Emma jumped at the chance for! Limocello...YES! Haha! Then the waiter made us the most delicious cocktail ever! It was called Scorpino and it is sicilian. It was made with presecco and egg whites/ or ice cream as it is white and frothy. It was so nice. Kind of tasted like an alcoholic meringue. We then walked around the red light district again, as we wondered if there were any men in windows. Apperently not just girls!
What another brilliant day! xx
