So we picked up a car in Dublin and took to the very narrow Irish roads. After a few wrong turns we found a very windy camping ground and since it was raining and getting dark we thought we better peg down for the night. We were more than rewarded for that choice when we went into town for dinner and found a Fish & Chip shop that sells potato cakes...YES!!!!!!
We head south down to Waterford and Wexford and take a picnic to explore the houses and lakes of the area. Our camping ground tonight is so cosy and the beach is just down the road (even if it is about 5 oC in Summer???).
We start the day doing a 25minutes circle of the area only to end up back infront of our campsite. Map in hand we finally make it out and head to Hook where we play in the local lighthouse and take in the breathetaking views. On to Duncannon and a few more park stops we find an underground cave and put our explorer hats back on. With about 5 minutes to spare before last entry we also make Cahir Castle where we crawl in and out of new and old holes, walls and cannon blasts.
We set out with a plan to make Galway by the evening but the south west of Ireland just has too many beautiful sights to take in and we find ourselves stopping every half an hour to get happy snaps, talk to the locals and learn more about the history of the county. Killarney National Park was absolutely beauitful from the waterfalls to the Victorian houses (or should I say estates) and the little country farm houses. I heart the South West of Ireland.
We head to Limerick and HELLOOOOOOOOO doea anyone live in this town? Not a person in sight and not 1 shop open (not even McDonalds). So we start the drive to Tipperary in hope that we will find some breakfast on the way. An hour or so longer we have arrived in the town (no food in our tummies) but alas there is a restaurant open. A rather long way north and we spend the night in a little town called Westport where we head to the thatched pub for dinner and a pint.
We drive the beautiful coastal roads to Derry and stop in a town which we named (little Amsterdam) but was actually called Sligo. We were served (by far) the best muffins and coffee on the trip. Once we arrived in Derry we set off to explore in and walk around the walled city.
Up early and we drive along the Giant's Causeway and cross the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge, the water below us is picture perfect showing blues and greens that only the ocean can create. In the afternoon we arrived in Belfast and found a hop-on-hop-off bus and did Belfast like a tourist (our feet were sore by this day). Very good tour and guide and after travelling around for about 2 hours my heart wasn't feeling right about what Belfast has had to go through definitely a history lesson I wont forget.
From the crazy roads of Belfast to the crazy roads of Dublin and we find out Metalica is in town which = no accomodation. Lucky after 2 hours of walking/driving I remember the little pub I fell in love with last time I was in this city has B&B accomodation and we snatch up he last room and the only car park - Score!!!! What a great night sleep we all had...the softness of a mattress and a hot shower to wake up to was definitely a change from sleeping on the ground and walking to camp ground toliet blocks.
Last day of our trip and I showed Sheralee around Dublin and enjoyed revisiting some of the sights in the summer that were a bit frozem over or covered with rain in March.
