On The Road with Lou!
Sunday was spent as a tourist at a frantic pace. Started at the Holocaust Museum, which took several hours do to the various tours. It was a emotionally powerful and poignant experience.
Then I went next door to the Bureau of Engraving & Printing, part of the Department of the Treasury. Saw the whole money making process from plate design to shipping a pallet load of $100.00 bills! The DoT prints about $900 Million dollars a day! The average $20 bill last 22 months.
Due to the sensitive nature of the Holocaust material, and security concerns at Dot, neither of those locations allowed any photography or recording. They were nice about it, had signs at the door, never said a word to me.
Then I got on the HOHO and took the entire 2 hour loop, on the second pass I got off at the Spy & Espionage Museum and the Museum of Crime & Punishment. These last 2 stops are not part of the Smithsonian, and are privately run. Because of that they are quite expensive, run by very rude staff, overcrowded, limited in scope and not a very good experience.
Neither of these 2 Museums allowed photography or recording either, however they were very rude about it. I was called out by no less than 5 staff at the Spy Museum about using my video camera, I wasn’t, I was carrying it. I took it 4 times, but on the 5th I shot back just as rudely. That seemed to work, they left me alone after that, and turned their attentions to other more menacing camera toting housewives. At the C&P I used a locker to store it so I wouldn’t get yelled at.
Got back on the HOHO and went to Union Station, caught a cab and went back to the motel. I was able to shoot some video from the open top bus, which I will post tonight, was too bagged last night to do any work. The evening was taken up by the bane of all Road Warriors, laundry!
I also had to map my way out of here, I don’t want to do the ‘pick the third one’ method on my departure, the chances of sloppy navigation is very high.
I am packed and ready to depart shortly, I’ll be on the Interstate westbound into the Cincinnati area, going to see Johnny Fever!
Talk tonight!
