On The Road with Lou!
Awoke at 0900 to the sound of an air raid siren, didn’t think much of it (as I didn’t know what it was) so rolled over and went back to sleep. The Front Desk called 5 minutes later and suggested I move to their basement store room as there was tornado activity detected within 20 miles. Looked out the window to see a thunderstorm of Biblical proportions underway. Checked the weather radar for the USA and found that of 2 major weather systems active on the mainland United States, I was in the middle of the biggest. See attached image, that’s me in Willmar, MN right under the red, for heavy!
Handling that news with suitable Canadian aplomb and naivety I again rolled over and went back to sleep, in my bed, not in the basement storeroom.
Departed at noon during a break in the downpour, with the plan to head south to drive out of the rain. Plan was partially successful, with the exception of 10 minutes of hail. Then I spent the day heading east until I caught up to the system, then south to get out of it again. Drove from Willmar, MN to Dubuque, IA (700 kms).
Pretty uneventful day for the most part, just a few miscellaneous ramblings.
Why do cyclist wave at motorcyclists? Do they feel some sort of kinship? We both have 2 wheels, but the similarities end there. Don’t get me wrong, I wave back, I hafta protect my Karma in case I run out of gas again! I draw the line at mopeds though, plus I never initiate the wave, but I always wave back.
On the other hand, driving through the Iowa corn belt, everyone waves. Guys in farm equipment, little old ladies on porches, kids on tricycles, very friendly area. I like that a lot! Speaking of corn, I drove for many hours with the road continually flanked by corn rows. There is a s***load of corn being grown in America. I guess they need a s***load of corn syrup to keep everybody fat!
There are small black birds that sit in the corn on either side of the road. They are startled by my pipes as I ride through and all the birds on the right side of the road fly left, and those on the left fly right. They create this interlocking weave of birds, right at head level. I used to dodge, weave and duck, but they seem to know what they are doing, never hit one yet.
Changed maps today and I find I am still about 3 days ride from DC. I think my south and east plan may have given me the ultra super long way, so I think I will try a day on the Interstate on Tuesday. I finally adjusted my mirrors so I can keep tabs behind me. I’ll hafta go 90 MPH to avoid being run over, but that’ll get the job done in a hurry!
Talk soon!
