On The Road with Lou!
Started the day in Dubuque, IA and rode through Illinois to Greenfield, IN (700 kms).
Spent the majority of the day on Interstate 74 making good time, traffic not too bad or too scary. Just be in the top 85% in terms of speed and you’ll be OK. It was another blue sky day and the temperatures and humidity are getting more manageable. Yesterday it was 95 + degrees with humidity in the 90%’s, not a good day to be wearing black leather. If only James Dean had wore a WHITE leather jacket, or maybe Fonzy then black wouldn’t be the preferred motorcycle color!
It was a pretty uneventful day so I will fill out today’s blog with some notes from yesterday that my Goldfish like memory forgot last night.
I spent some time on the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial highway. Wasn’t she the middle sister from Little House on the Prairie? I think I might have had a thing for her when I was 8, her and the youngest sister on the Brady Bunch, although Cindy never got a highway named after her.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to find the Classic American Walkout Motel, they all seem to have been replaced with the upscale mini hotel single entrance versions. That is a very sad fact.
I had Sushi for dinner last night, or at least Iowa’s version of Sushi which is imitation crab served 47 different ways. I ask for Toro, Tuna or Salmon sashimi and got a blank stare. Ordered Tempura Shrimp and got beer battered butterfly shrimp with cocktail sauce. Shoulda known better.
I passed by the Spam museum outside of Austin, MN. Didn’t go in, as tempting as it was, but I know from watching Kenny vs. Spenny what the excess nitrates in processed meats do to you (they grow man boobs) and I wanna stay away from that. The Spam museum billboard made the picture of the day.
I tried to shoot some video from my bike today but the camera shuts off right when I get to speed, must be because the hard disc is a platter and spindle, not solid state so it has a vibration threshold. Too bad, the road at the end of the day was spectacular. Have to get a solid state Hero Cam for next time.
Looks like I am still a full days ride and a bit to DC, will try to get as close as possible to Washington so arrival day will be a short one.
Talk soon!
