First off, we have to give honourable mention to a local canteen where we have now had lunch on three occasions. It is a big meal hall with homemade Hungarian specialties, and for around 3 euros you can have an amazing hot meal. The kicker: not a tourist in sight! Well, maybe just two.
This afternoon we checked out the Hospital in the Rock, which was built during WWII in the limestone caves of the Buda hills. The hospital was first used by the Nazis, and later by the Soviets, because its bunker style made for an excellent hideout. Made to hold 200 patients, at its peak the hospital cared for over 700!
To cap it all off, we paid a visit to a ruin pub, another quintessential Budapest experience. Ruin pubs are clubs that were created when the ground floors of abandoned buildings were reclaimed and turned into quirky venues for local musicians and artists. We visited Szimpla Kert, Budapest's oldest ruin pub, which had the most bizarre collection of scavenged art decor that we've ever seen. Very cool!
