Yesterday we were up at the crack of dawn ready to be at the Oz Experience office for our 7.20am start and a trip into the Blue Mountains. Our bus and tour guide (Adam, or Knackers!) arrived on time and the guide slightly worried us to start with by donning fake teeth and a wig, luckily we soon realised he was a joker and enjoyed listening to him as we drove out of Sydney passed the Olympic Park.
Our first port of call, after around an hours driving, was a camp grounds with the Blue Mountains National Park, which was a well-known spot for seeing wild kangaroos and we were in luck. We saw about a dozen of the hopping creatures and managed to get quite close to them to get some good pictures. We stayed in the area about half an hour admiring the kangaroos, including a male who got a bit excited when he saw a female! Then we headed for a breakfast stop (enjoying some cinnamon toast) before a further drive into the heart of the Blue Mountains.
We parked up in the Wentworth Falls area and spent a couple of hours on a bush walk through the vast vegetation, walking under cliff faces and across waterfalls to various look out points where we enjoyed spectacular views of the seemingly never ending forest. Adam kept us informed with a number of stories and facts about the Mountain areas, including how the area got its name (from the number of eucalyptus trees forming a blue haze over the top of the trees) and he even showed us the deadliest spider in the world, the Funnell Web spider, luckily it was in its hole in the ground and we exited quickly before we got bit! Wentworth Falls themselves were spectacular, apparently we were luckily to see the falls with water running from them as usually at this time of year they are dry.
Following the bush walk we were starving and we made a short journey to Wentworth Falls Lake, where we enjoyed bread, ham, cheese and salad with fruit and muesli bars before being entertained by Adam and his didgeridoo!
The late afternoon was spent walking down the 902 Furber steps in order to embark on our journey on the scenic railway (the steepest railway in the world), a steep and scary short railway journey back to the top of the hill, Laura and Stacey had their hearts in their mouths for most of the journey! Following this it was time to head back to the city and after getting dropped off at around 7.00pm we headed straight to the supermarket to stock up on picnic items for Christmas Day! In the evening it was time to get into the xmas spirit and after a couple of glasses of wine in Kelly and Stacey's room we headed down to Scubar, where we spent the evening dancing away to cheesy christmas music and even a Spice Girls Remix. Drunkenly we then raided the kitchens of both ours and Kel and Stacey's hostel before passing out!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
This morning we awoke feeling a little worse for wear but soon recovered when we realised it was CHRISTMAS DAY! We opened our present, which had been travelling around with us for 2 months! Then headed down to drink hot chocolate and eat thorntons choccies for breakfast! We slowly got ready then met up with Stacey and a very hungover Kelly before catching the bus to Bondi Beach!
Unfortunately the weather wasn't like we had hoped, overcast and windy, but we still managed a picnic of lots of crisps, ham and turkey sandwiches and cookies washed down with a cheeky bottle of vodka and coke (no alcohol allowed in the beach area - oops naughty!), and a game of charades on the grass overlooking the beach. We braved the cool temperature and braved it on the beach for an hour before leaving around 5.00pm to get an ice cream (yep - ice cream on xmas day!) and catch the bus back ready for a typically chilled out Christmas Day evening, unfortunately without the crap British TV!
