Day 178 - We woke up at 5am as Lloyd had discovered BEDBUGS (a travellers worst nightmare). We had never had them before so weren't 100% sure but he had felt something on his chest and managed to catch it. After looking at it we got up and turned the laptop on to do a bit of research and were correct, we found 3 more after a good inspection, not an infestation but definitely a problem. I Skyped home as it was a good time and waited until a reasonable time to check out. We told Tony the owner and he was annoyed to say the least, its such a nightmare for the hostels/hotels/guest-houses, it doesn't matter how clean they are a traveller brings them in. We walked along to the bus stop, after waiting half an hour we realised the bus wasn't going to come (there was no timetable the bus only left the station when it was full then did a whole circuit of the city before heading back). We flagged down a taxi and it wasn't too much to the bus station. As we walked in to the station we saw a but leaving for Kuala Lumpur, feeling hungry but with no time we jumped on the bus and set off. We arrived in to KL about midday. The bus station was miles away from the city centre and we were really hungry now, we found a nice bakery in the station so had some brunch before getting the subway in to the centre. We checked in and headed straight out, we had a little walk around Chinatown and Petaling street, here was just stalls and stalls of knock off goods. We had a little look in some bookshops for our Myanmar(Burma) book then headed to the central market. The central market was full of the most amazing antiques and souvenirs, all at a pretty high price. We admired the many shops then stopped for a spot of lunch. From here we headed over to Merdaka Square. We went in to the KL gallery, inside was loads of great information about the city and its history, there was even a giant 3D map which was all lit up in the dark. It wasn't too big so after a nose about we had a look round the gift shop where you could watch people carving wooden item for the shop - a nice touch. Outside we walked across the square, here held the largest flag pole in the world waving the Malaysian flag and there was some beautiful buildings surrounding the square including a magnificent mosque and a Tudor style building. We walked all the way back to the hostel and caved in to an early night.
Day 179 - We were woken up by the call of the Mosque at 5am but nodded back off and got up about 7 for our free breakfast. We had read that the Petronas Towers gave away free tickets to the first 1460 customers to ride to the top so we headed down nice and early and were there by 8:30am. We had a nasty surprise though to find they no longer offer free tickets to anyone and that everyone who wanted to go up (students included) now had to pay a hefty 85 ringgit (about £20). We were not willing to pay £40 to go to the top so headed to the shopping centre to have a look around. But this was shut until 10am - nightmare. However we did find a Starbucks selling Asian Dolche Latte's which I couldn't pass up on so we stopped there to spend some time. We had a walk around the gardens outside of the towers which were lovely and gave great photos opportunities. Soon enough the shops were open and we had a browse and a look in a few book shops. We walked along to Bukit Bintang and had a look at the western bars and shops which looked great - really good ex-pat community. We then walked right along to the KL tower. There is a big nature reserve around the tower where you can do nature walks up so we headed in that direction. On the way we were stopped by police and told there was a crazy man walking about and beware, they asked where we were going and sent us on our way. We passed the crazy man (he looked like he was talking to God about the cars passing by and was wearing just a bin bag tied like a pair of undies). We got to the reserve to find it closed for renovation - gutted, couldn't believe the police didn't tell us, so back past the crazy man we went. We walked back to the hostel through little India and had some beautiful Indian food. Then we went to buy the Burma book - nowhere sold it cheap and we paid a lot more than we would have in England but we needed it. Back at the hostel we spent the afternoon reading up on Burma. This is when we realised you couldn't get a visa of arrival like we thought you could, we needed to get it before which meant getting it here. We popped out to a tiny street restaurant behind our hostel and had Nasi Lemak for tea.
Day 180 - We got up early and headed straight to the Myanmar embassy. The visa was only 'next day' collection so it meant staying an extra night in KL which was a bit of a nightmare but its a big city so not too much of a waste. The embassy was easy to find and we were one of the first there, we filled out all our forms and handed in our passports. One the way back to the metro station we stopped at a supermarket (this seemed to be the up-end ex-pat part of town) and got some cookies, juice and some lunch. We popped back to the hostel and dropped off some things then got back on the train to Batu Caves. This is a sacred Hindu sight, we were slightly disappointed by the whole place. The first cave was just full of flashy lights and statues and they tried to charge you to go in. Then we passed a temple and another cave advertising itself as a wildlife photo opportunity also charging. We then walked along to see the giant shrine, this was impressive and along side it was a large stair case which we climbed. At the top were hundreds of moneys running about, very cute! The cave was great, so high but kind of just have statues here and there that looked run down. At the end was a tiny praying area and nothing else so we headed back down and past another cave charging to get in. All in all not much to see and a lot of exploitation although there were still some beautiful temples and praying areas. That night we walked along Petaling street and had some lovely street food, Prawn Char Keow Teoy, rain came from nowhere but the street vendors all had covers straight our which was great. After we decided to treat ourselves to Ice-cream sundaes from Mcdonald's.
Day 181 - During the night a few people had come in to the room drunk- they were actually very quiet but one lad after being in bed about an hour got up and decided to have a wee in the middle of the floor then get in to someone else's bed. Lloyd woke up to find him doing it so went to reception to get someone to clean it up while his friends tired to get him in to his own bed. It was actually quite funny but due to a disrupted sleep we allowed ourselves a well deserved lie-in. We had covered pretty much the whole city so after breakfast we decided to do some much needed research on Burma, mainly because its such an untouched country we hardly knew much about. We got talking to two Australian lads (One was British but his family had emigrated when he was much younger) they had both been working in South Korea and took an interest in our Burma book. After lots of talking we went to lunch with them in Little India, it was nice talking to them, they were really nice lads. It was about 3pm and we had to get to the other side of town to collect our visa's so we said our goodbye's and headed over. We were given the visas no problem at all which was great. From here we went to buy our bus ticket to Penang for the next day, now we knew the visa was sorted we could leave KL. We still had all our clothes in a plastic bag from the bed bug incident so headed to the laundrette to get it all washed. It was a serve yourself station so we got it all going then went to the little cafe outside for tea. We ordered some lovely Malay food and went back to hostel for an early night.
