Today is our last day. We have to check out by 1:30 (late checkout) but our flight isn't until 6:30. We got up and Vic decided to make coffee. He opened the package and the coffee went everywhere. I guess we were just not meant to have it in our room. So we figured we'd go for breakfast and then one last walkabout to pick up some great hot sauce we've been using. We passed a couple of smart looking policia and I asked if I could take their picture. They nodded ok and I went to snap the photo and they put on their best macho pose and one lifted his machine gun so I could get a good photo. I didn't even realize they had a rifle. I don't think I would have asked for a photo if I'd seen it. The photo doesnt show the rifle that well but I wasn't going to ask for another shot (no pun intended). Vic told me I was very brazen to ask!! Then we went into Iglesia del Carmen to check it out. Nice church but not as ornate as I would have thought from the outside. That took us to 10:30 and we figured we weren't done yet so baked for a couple of hours at the pool and then packed and decided to just get to the airport and have lunch there.
I want to thank (the few) people that commented on the blog. It means a lot to hear from you.
Things I learned on this trip (in addition to all the facts):
- You have to watch where you're going - there are obstacles everywhere. In the Galápagos, there were rocks, roots, and various animals (iguanas, sea lions etc). In Quito and Panama there were uncovered holes, cracked pavement and some rude people.
- English is not spoken everywhere (even though it seemed like it before this trip).
- I can't take the heat and humidity unless I have a cerveza close at hand and a pool or ocean to jump into.
- Panamanians do not sweat, no matter how hot it is. They wear a lot of black and long pants.
- Many people in Panama are inconsiderate. I don't know whether they are just ignorant or whether it's their culture. For instance, this morning, there was a guy right outside our door talking very loudly on his cellphone. I had to tell him to go elsewhere as some people were still sleeping. I know there are rude people everywhere but there seem to be an inordinate number here.
- Panama looks prosperous because of the number of condos and office towers but it's really not. Once you get to see the other parts of the city there are many people who are destitute.
- Wifi at Tocumen airport is awful. It took me an hour and I can't count how many tries to login. You get 30 minutes free at a very slow speed.
- There are very few good-looking Ecuadorians or Panamanians (in my opinion). The few attractive women in Panama seem to be full of themselves and always seem to be posing for an invisible photographer.
- Spanish is an ugly language. They always sound like they're yelling and they talk so fast you feel like you're at a perpetual auction.
- Even after all the travelling I've done I'm still challenged by packing. I had way too many jeans and not enough shorts.
- I really like not wearing makeup. That's the only thing I like about the incredibly hot & humid weather. There is no point putting it on as it just melts off me in the tropics.
- I'm sure that there are other things that will come to mind after I post but I'm rushing before my wifi is cut off! Ive already been cut off once and managed to get it back.
Hope to see you soon.
