Today is day 2 of the Nationals. It is even chillier today than yesterday but no rain. We woke up to 9 degree temperatures. It felt right clipped (very cold) outside.
Kyle woke up in cheer (in good spirits). I have been calling him Oscar the past few days (after Sesame Street's Oscar the grouch) and he has no idea why. Lol
Kyle has 2 games today and Tyler only 1. The name of their teams is New Tec, for New Tecumseh which is where their teams are based.
Kyles team seemed much more together today for their first game. They won it easily (4-0). Kyle had some good chances to score but wasn't able to bury the ball.
We had lunch and Kyle had to get the team bus to his game. So Theresa and I decided to do a bit of shopping downtown before heading to the next game. St. John's is such a friendly and picturesque old-world city. The buildings are painted all colours and it gives it a cheery feeling regardless the weather.
Kyle's second game was at the same time as Tyler's so we had to make a decision about whose game to watch. We decided that we had already seen Kyle play today so we were going to catch Tyler's game.
Tyler's game was an exciting game to watch but we were on the wrong side of the score. The boys had the luck of a s***house rat (bad luck). We lost 5-3. Unfortunately, that means Tyler's team drops down to the consolation round with a win, a tie and a loss.
On a happier note, Kyle's team won 7-3. He got 1 goal & 3 assists. Figures! We, obviously, chose the wrong game to watch! Kyles team ended up in first place in their division (with 2 wins and a tie) and will play a semi final game tomorrow on their quest for gold.
I have uploaded some videos of the play for those who haven't seen ball hockey before. You can even hear Theresa's commentary in some of them. I hope you can view them. I've tried uploading videos before and it doesn't always work. It takes some time to load them so be patient and, hopefully, they'll play for you. The boys run like a scald cat (very fast) and can be rough and it's hard to catch sight of the ball as it Is like a bullet and bounces all over the place. It's very exciting to watch and the players really have to be agile. I'll go to bait for dat (I'll vouch for that).
After the games, Kyle went out with some of his tea and was staying with one of the boys overnight so Theresa and I went to the 31st Annual George Street Festival. What a party! The street was filled to the gunnels (filled to capacity) with many people full to the horn (dead drunk) by 10:00 pm. we saw one girl dancing in her bra and jeans and then a guy and girl mooning the crowd. We had to dodge kids trying to escape the crowd so they could find a quiet place to puke. Believe me, we helped them pass by as fast as we could. It was quite a feat as we were packed in like sardines. The festival is held every year and they have several bands performing every day. We saw Trooper tonight. We felt a little out of our league as at least 75% of the people there were 1/2 our age. At times we thought it was starting to rain but it was just people driving works (carrying on in a foolish mood) and throwing their drinks around. I'm really glad I never carried on (acted foolish) like that! ;-) After Trooper performed we went to a pub and listened to some Newfoundland/ Irish folk music and watched all the Newfoundlanders dance. We couldn't believe the amount of garbage on the street - plastic cups, beer cans, cigarette butts etc. You can get an idea of it in the picture of Theresa.
We hailed a cab and got a cabbie who was a Newfoundlander through and through. He had more lip than a rubber boot (liked to talk a lot). I'm pretty sure we had a real nice chat with him (even though I couldn't understand half of what he was on about)! I just kept laughing and saying "Eh b'y" (agreeing with him). We got back to the hotel just before 1:00 a.m. as we have some serious cheering to do in the morning.
Thanks to everyone who's commented on the blog. It helps motivate me. :-)
