Lisa's Big Adventure
Greenwich
We decided to head out to Greenwich for half a day, and lucky for us, chose a lovely blue-skied day to do so. Mum, Dad and I boarded a ferry for the journey up the Thames at 10am and arrived in Greenwich about an hour later. The journey up was really good, getting to see London sights from the river. It was good getting to go under the Tower Bridge, and to see the Tower of London, London Eye etc from a different angle.
The first thing that struck me about Greenwich was that is was so green. There were some beautiful buildings, housing the maritime museum and other galleries and surrounding them, was this green park. Behind the buildings, leading up the hill to the Royal Observatory was a gorgeous park, and I can imagine it covered in people in summer. Climbed the hill to the observatory and took in the views before we took the tacky tourist photos of us on either side of the date line. Greenwich mean time and all that. Went into the Royal Observatory, which was very, very interesting, showing the history of the Royal astronomers who'd lived there and the equipment used through the ages. It really highlighted how smart those men were, and how important their work was.
After the observatory, Mum and I left Dad to explore the Maritime museum and headed over to the art gallery where we looked at some lovely artwork. We re-boarded the ferry to come back to London mid afternoon and were given commentary on the way back about the landmarks we were passing.
I really enjoyed my day out at Greenwich and found it all completely fascinating. I'd wanted to go there just to get that tacky tourist shot, but left appreciating the importance of the place, and those who had lived there over the last couple of hundred years.
