Lisa's Big Adventure
Wonderful Windsor and Eton
Yep, I finally got my butt in gear and headed out of London for the day and with no train mishaps (like last weeks adventure of making it onto the train only to have it get delayed for hours due to a fatality so my trip was cancelled that day!). I was on a train at Clapham Junction just after 9:30am and in Windsor 40 minutes later.
My first stop, naturally, was the castle, home of the Queen when she decides to visit - which happened to be the week before. Saw the changing of the guard - still haven't managed to do that at Buckingham Palace despite working a whole 3 minutes walk away! - and then I made my way inside the castle. My favourite bits were Queen Mary's Dolls House, a gorgeous, yes, dolls house. Everything in it worked and was 1/12 of the size of us. Absolutely gorgeous. Then it was onto my other fave bit - the state apartments. Now this is how you get to see how the other half lives. All that gold, paintings and marvellous ceilings and walls. Just spectacular. It really lived up to my expectations of what the Queen's castle should be like.
Headed out of the castle over 2 hours later and had some lunch as I wandered the town of Windsor. A lovely little town, full of charm but still with all the shopping you'd expect of London. So of course, I had a good browse, enjoying not battling the crowds of Oxford Street and soaking up the cleaner air and sunshine.
Then it was time to walk over the river into Eton, the town on the other side. My main reason for going to Eton was to check out Eton College, where Prince William went to school - and many other royalty and rich people I would assume. The college wasn't much and Eton wasn't as attractive as it's neighbour.
My afternoon was complete when I wandered back over the river, standing on the bridge in the sun for a while, listening to two guys busking. They were very good and for the first time I found myself putting some change in the guitar case.
By then it was time to head back to London so I said farewell to Windor, thoroughly pleased after my day there. Even without the castle, I'd recommend anyone go there as it was a lovely place and a great day out.
