Lisa's Big Adventure
Lauterbrunnen and Jaungfrau
We arrived in the little town of Lauterbrunnen around 7ish and immediately settled into our rooms before heading down for dinner. We got to eat fondue which felt very Swiss! That night I had a few drinks down in the bar with some of the group before heading off to bed, determined to get a good night's sleep before heading up Jaungfrau the following day.
Took off relatively early the next morning to catch the train up to the top of Jaungfrau. The train journey up took an hour and a half, and was in a little cable car type contraption. I tried not to think about how small it was, and the height and angle we were travelling! The higher we travelled, the more the snow filled the landscape until it was all you could see.
Jaungfrau Mountain is the highest place you can travel via public transport in the world. It also has the highest post office box and internet terminal. There are many things to do once you get up there, including being able to go out on the glacier (unfortunately closed that day), having husky rides (also not happening when we were there, due to the weather), going in an ice palace and numerous lookouts to see the alps close up in all their glory.
The first thing that Hitomi, Niki and I did was to go check out the ice palace. This is constructed completely out of ice and has lots of ice sculptures inside. Very well done and very cold obviously. We then went to some of the lookouts and wandered around outside as much as we could stand. After some hot chocolate and soup for lunch, we spent a little more time wandering outside until the high altitude affects couldn't be ignored any longer. These effects seem to differ from person to person but I developed a very bad headache, dizziness and extreme exhaustion.
We caught the train back down, taking in more fabulous views as we came down the mountain. Went for a little wander around the little town of Lauterbrunnen before heading back to our accommodation for a breather before dinner.
