Lisa's Big Adventure
Paris
I headed off to Paris with Bec, Kel and Matt. Our adventurous weekend started when we got to the Eurostar check in counter at 6am and found that our tickets hadn't been confirmed by the travel agent and therefore we didn't have the tickets we'd paid for! After forking out another £200 we jumped on a later train and arrived in Paris. The journey on the Eurostar over was really quick and Matt amused me by constantly asking on each tunnel we went through "Is this the tunnel?" He was of course, referring to the one that would take us under the water from England to France. Of course, when we actually got to the tunnel, he when "hmpt" after about 30 seconds. The tunnel was so fast though - we were out of it in 20 minutes. For some reason, I expected it to be longer. We arrived at Guard du Nord station and embarked on our next adventure - the metro. On finding our hotel we were told that there were water problems so we had been booked into another hotel. By this stage we couldn't believe our luck! Was this what all travelling was like?
So at 3pm we decided to go find some lunch and jumped on a bus to the Arc de Triomphe (absolutely impressive but man those French drivers are crazy!). The Arc de Triomphe was pretty amazing with the way the 10 or so streets merge onto a roundabout with what appears to be no rules what so ever. We headed down the street to find a café for lunch. After taking 40 minutes to read the menu with the help of a phrase book and dictionary, we ended up with ham and cheese sandwiches! Then we began our sightseeing at 4pm, walking down the Champs Elysees, which was great and over to the Eiffel Tour where we made it up in time to get some great day shots, watch the sun set and then see Paris by night. Absolutely beautiful! At 11pm we managed to get lost trying to find our bus, walking around the Arc de Triomphe, exhausted after our early start and the k's we walked.
Sunday we went to the Louvre, which was absolutely amazing. And that was just the outside. The Louvre was my fave part of the trip as it was just mind blowing, getting to see these marvellous works of art. And the Mona Lisa was so much smaller than I expected. After our visit to the Louvre, we had some lunch and then walked to the Notre Dame. It wasn't quite as impressive as I thought it would be and by that stage, I felt like the hunchback, I was so tired and aching from all our walking! A spell in a patiserre with a lovely dessert followed and that night we headed out to the Champs Elysees again to have dinner at a cafe. The food was divine and well worth the splurge!
Monday the weather was crappy but we headed off to Montmarte which is how I pictured Paris to be - quaint. At the top of the hill is another church, the Sacre Cour which was awesome. After climbing the hill, you just had to sit down inside and take it in - not only the grandeur of the place but to catch your breath after the hill. After lunch we walked up the sex street (Pigalle street) to the Moulin Rouge. We arrived home tired, exhausted, and pleased to find ourselves understanding people in the street!
I fell in love with Paris, and I think it was the perfect place to start my European adventure off in. Now I just have to figure out where to go next!
