Pont Du Gard in Provence
Enroute to Barcelona, we stopped at Provence, home of the ancient Roman aqueduct. The Pont du Gard was built shortly before the Christian era to allow the aqueduct of Nîmes (which is almost 50 km long) to cross the Gard river. The Roman architects and hydraulic engineers who designed this bridge, which stands almost 50 m high and is on three levels - the longest measuring 275 m - created a technical as well as an artistic masterpiece.
I remember learning about this structure in my ancient history lessons and what an amazing achievement it was for the times. It was used to transport water. Seeing it close up in all it's glory was pretty amazing. What really impressed me was not only it's size and physical beauty, but that so much of it is still standing today. The Romans and many other engineers of ancient times built structures that were made to last and seeing these up close was just wonderful. Managed to climb to the top of it and look down on it from above, although you aren't allowed to walk on it for preservation reasons. The view from up there was amazing.
Seeing structures like this made me realise why I've always wanted to come and travel around Europe - for those moments of sheer wonder.
