Lisa's Big Adventure
San Diego and a visit to Tijuana, Mexico
Departed on the contiki tour in the Wednesday morning and drove down to San Diego, a short 3 hour trip. This meant that we arrived there mid morning in San Diego and took a cruise around the harbour. The view of the city from the water was lovely and I was able to see the naval and air force base as well. Then it was time to get back onto the bus and head to Mexico for a few hours. We passed over the Coronado Bridge, a huge structure almost like a theme park ride and through Coronado island, famous for it's hotel where Marilyn Monroe filmed Some Like it Hot and regularly visited.
We passed through the boarder into Mexico and the heat was intense. Then it was time for a ride into the border town of Tijuana, the only thing amid the dry barren land. We had lunch in a restaurant recommended by our tour leader and ate real Mexican food and drank very potent Margaritas. I successfully avoided the dentists chair, a prank they pull on the tourists which involved having your mouth held open, head tilted back and tequila poured in. Sometimes they'll then shake your head back and forth or spin you around so the tequila effects are felt more quickly.
After lunch we wandered the main street for a little while, trying to ignore the hagglers as the men and women tried to call you into their shop. I can't say I really liked Tijuana for that and it just had this air of seediness to it. But it was great to go there and see what it was all about.
Heading back into San Diego a few hours later, we were driven around the Gaslamp quarter and given a tour of the city before going to our hotel. Dinner that night was at loud and entertaining restaurant before we hit some clubs for drinking and dancing. I finally fell into bed, exhausted at about 3am.
