Day 64 - 12th Mar - Today we went on a tour a little out of ByronBay to a place called Nimbin. We got picked up in a hippy tour bus which was painted in a psychedelic rainbow! Nimbin is known historically for having a large population of drugs, it came to be like this when the Vietnam War was taking place. Men who were trying to avoid compulsory enlisting fled to Nimbin to campaign and staged an anti-war festival, which is when the influence of drugs in the place began. After this point an agreement was made between the people of Nimbin and the local police that meant that drugs became practically legal here with many local authorities actively encouraging many of the drug users to move to this area. So we went for a day trip there!!! It was actually a really funny experience once we got into the town we went for a walk around, met some of the locals many of whom stayed there since the festival, and went to the local museum which had a brief history of the area. The town was full of a lot of bearded hippy types, all of whom were very chilled out and enjoyed singing 'don't worry, be happy' to us. The whole town has a drug themed atmosphere but not in a scary way, but quite comically, like they had a shop called 'Bring-a-bong' instead of Billabong. Another shops opening hours were listed as 'Open from 9 or 10, maybe 11 depending on how we are feeling. Sometimes it maybe even as late as 2 or 3, but can be as early as 6 a.m. Until 5 or 6 p.m. or even 11 or 12 depending on whether we can be bothered. And some days we don't even open!', it basically took up the whole wall in front of the shop, and everyone who walked by took photos. Next we headed just outside Nimbin to a natural waterfall and went for a swim, it was such a beautiful area to just spend some time, it was really secluded and in the middle of an area of Rain-forest. Before we headed back we all had a BBQ in a little picnic area within the National Park, again which was really quiet and peaceful
