Lisa and Simon`s Around the World Tour
We were only in Arequipa for half a day so we hurridley went around the sites. Mainly the Juanita Museum and the beautiful Santa Catalina Convent.
Juanita was a young girl who was sacrificed to the Gods as part of her culture around 500AD. She was buried at the top of a mountain after having her skull brutally fractured by a heavy blow to the head. As soon as they did this, they buried her and she immediately froze as she was on a glacier. Because of this, she has been perfectly preserved over decades until the neighbouring volcano erupted and destroyed her tomb.
She was found in 1995 still frozen and perfectly preserved. She remains frozen in the museum. It is amazing how all her skin, hair and fingernails are intact after all this time. It was a bit eery seeing her in the freezer but still very interesting.
For the next two days we spent many hours on a coach through some stunning scenery, to and from the Colca Canyon. Apart from the spectacular landscape, the main highlight was getting to see two enormous Condors flying within metres over our heads. They are massive creatures with a wing span of about three meters.
After a day on a bus on bumpy roads, we went to some local hot springs to sooth our sore bottoms whilst drinking a Pina Colada. Simon of course had a beer.
The hotel we stayed in was full of charm and character with amazing views of the valley. The best part was the resident Llama who spent most of his time trying to sneak inside through the doors to reception. When he succeeded, he was then chased out of the door by the receptionist brandishing a chair.
After our trip to the Canyon, we caught the night bus to Nazca.
