Lisa and Simon`s Around the World Tour
Stayed in Puno for a couple of days, a town at the edge of the enormous Lake Titicaca which is shared by Bolivia and Peru. Not too exciting, but serves as the jumping off point for Lake Titicaca.
Spent a couple of days on the lake, visiting Amantani Island where we stayed with a local family. Basic accomodation, no electricity, outside toilet and no form of transport on the Island whatsoever. Our family lived at the top of the village so it meant a steep walk to our accomodation.
That afternoon the boys all played football with the locals and, despite what Simon´s caption on one of the photos says, they lost 5-2. They claimed that the altitude affected their performance, and on home turf would have run rings around them. Yeah right.
Simon and I had dinner with the family in a room no bigger than a small shed with an open fire at one end to prepare the food on. The food was great and we managed to have a little conversation despite the language barrier.
After dinner we were dressed in traditional clothing by the woman of the house and taken to the village hall where we met the rest of the group (also staying with families and similarly dressed). There was a band made up of the villagers playing traditional music and we were dragged up by our hosts and taught to dance!
In the morning we had breakfast with the family before jumping on a boat to visit one of the floating islands (made entirely of reeds) upon which small communities live and have done for centuries.
Now heading off to Cuzco, The gateway to the Amazon and Inca Trail.
Lisa.
