Linda's Travel Diary
Went to Avignon today which is known as the City of the Popes as hundreds of years ago the Holy See was moved from Rome to Avignon for approximately 70 years, on the orders of a Pope who was French. Ok that's the fascinating fact of the day over with.
Interesting place - the walls and fortresses that were built to protect the Popes still remain here and the place looks almost medieval, but in excellent condition. The cathedral was really lovely and the statue of the Madonna overlooking the square was quite beautiful, covered in gold leaf.
An authentic historical monument and a lovely place to visit if you get the chance.
