That night, we headed out for a couple of drinks but had an early start so didn't really want to stay too late. We said our goodbyes to the rest of the group and then it was just the 4 of us heading to the Cattle Station. It was a long journey, but broken up a bit with a game of bowls, lunch and various other drinks stops. Then we got to the cattle station which was pretty much a farm. The accommodation was 'interesting' with bunk beds and lizards taking up most of the room. Luckily we were only there for one night. We got there, settled our stuff and then ate some meat which they wouldn't tell us what it was until we had tried it, it was goat and actually quite nice. Then we had whipping lessons which was pretty funny, I was rubbish! And then we did the bucking broncho which was again hilarious and again I was rubbish and didn't last very long. I met a few girls that will be in Sydney the same time as me which is pretty cool. It seems we see a lot of the same people along the way.
The next morning we had to be up early for a goat rodeo, where we had to practice lassooing and then had to get into the pen (gross) with the goats and try to catch them. I was in a team with the guys so I let them do the hard work and I just branded it, ha!
Annoyingly it was raining so we didn't do much else and made our way on the coach to Hervery Bay which is where we were going to Fraser Island from. We had a stop off along the way to play some bowls which was quite funny and luckily the sun had come out. We stopped for lunch a bit and had quite a long day till we got to Hervey Bay about 4pm. Then we had our briefing session for the 3 day trip to Fraser Island in the 4 wheel drive pink truck he he. They scared me a bit with all the talks of rollovers, deaths, accidents but I trusted the guys I was with and I'm still here to tell the tale. We made a salad for dinner afterwards and then just packed ready for the next few days. We had to be up earlyish again, they told us how to use the truck and we were on our way. We had to get the barge to the island and then we were there. The roads were pretty scary and the truck wobbled from side to side. Luckily, the guys driving were used to snow in Canada so they knew what to do. We were in a group of 8 which was the 4 of us from the original bus and 4 Swedish girls who were really nice. We filled our water bottle with water, headed up to Eli Creek along the beach which was cool and then went in the lake for a bit before setting up our campsite a bit further along the beach.
I know, me... camping!! Would you believe. We had to watch out for dingoes because they can be quite agressive and get food off you, we saw quite a few around. Oh and going to the toilet without a toilet was a bit of a challenge and definitely an experience but all in all it was good fun, made more fun with the goon he he.
It got dark quite early so we actually went to bed quite early and then headed off to the shipwreck. It was going to be taken by the Japanese apparently but they left it there and then the Australians used it to practice bombing in WWII which was quite ironic. Anyway, we saw that, went up to Indian Head and got an amazing (if a little scary) view from the cliffs and then I drove back down the beach! It took a while to get used to a manual again, especially given there were 7 other people in the truck but it was ok. I drove a fair bit down and then swapped over, it was a bit boring after a while.
After that, we went back to the lake at Eli Creek and then went over to the campsite for the night. This was not quite as successful as the last one even though we had toilets, mainly because I have been eaten alive by mosquitoes. Apparently they like eating you through leggings so I actually look like I have a disease or chicken pox or something, it's gross!! But we mingled with the other group, played games and had more goon and it was good fun.
The next morning we went to Lake McKenzie to have breakfast and it was (after the rain) absolutely stunning. We lazed there for most of the morning, I got thrown in the lake and we just chilled and tanned, it's a hard life! Anyway, we had to head back after that which is when we heard that one group had been warned to stay in the mainland because there was a tsunami alert which was a bit scary but we made it back to Hervey Bay safe and sound and then just had some Mexican dinner and got an early night.
The next morning we had a bit of time before our next bus to Rainbow beach. We just chilled by the pool and then went to Subway for lunch. Randomly, when we got on the bus, we saw the girls we'd left at Airlie Beach which was really nice. We all caught up and went for a few drinks last night. I was excited to see pink wine so I had a little bit of that, ha! Oh and we saw our bus driver from our first few days too. It was like a reunion and really good fun. Out hostel was not so nice and there was no air con so I spent most of the night sweating and not sleeping. Now I'm in Noosa and have left the guys for now. I'm with a couple of other girls though. The annoying thing is that it's raining!! :(
Hence, why I'm on here and have just written an essay. I'm hoping the weather will be nice for Surfer's Paradise tomorrow for a couple of nights. Then I'll see the guys on the bus again on Friday to go to Byron Bay.
I have to say I'd agree with people who say Oz is overrated, it's fun and there's so much to do and see but it's so expensive and so touristy, it's not quite what I expected. I've been lucky enough to meet lots of cool people, even though they were making fun of my accent most of the time!
Anyway, I hope you're all well and will try to keep you updated more regularly! xxx
